What level of map is best for improving?

So I've been playing mania for a while, mostly 4K but I do play a bit of the other key layouts.

I got to stuff around 4-4.5 where I was just barely squeaking out S ranks but I felt like I was for many tough sections just spamming keys hoping I hit stuff.
I started to realize that this might not be the best way to improve and maybe I should play slightly easier stuff that I can get good ACC on and might be able to FC. But I wanted your guys opinion should I

A. Just focus on maps I struggle to pass
B. Play maps as the A-S border range
C. Play maps where it's a challenge to FC but I am never spamming notes
D. Play even easier maps where I am more concerned with trying to get a good max 300 ratio
E. Play a mixture of options

Play maps that are around on the edge of what you can normally handle and don't push yourself too hard on maps you can't pass. FC's in mania are not that important, instead accuracy is. Having good acc is important, but don't concern with it too much if you are still having trouble reading patterns. Having 990k+ on 2* maps is mostly pointless, so I don't suggest spending too much time on it. Getting 990k+ on some 3* maps would be more worthwhile imo.

Since you are trying to pass the 4-4.5* barrier, I suggest you make a list of maps to practice on. I have a list of skill specific maps over here and I suggest downloading stepmania, yolomania, etc packs if you haven't already.

Thanks for the advice. I had been doing a mix of 2 types of training mostly. The A-S threshold level of maps and also playing easier songs where I was focusing more on accuracy. Around a level where my goal was 950,000+ or a 98%+ accuracy. I just seemed to have hit a wall where I felt like I wasn't able to keep up with the speed of he songs I was going for the 95% plays and was wondering if I should change gears as I might be learning "bad habits". But it sounds like from your comment that I am on the right track just I guess (play more)
