How to customize the left side of the play field where the online scores are shown. I wanted to put a animated image on top of it. I saw it on somebody's stream yesterday.

Unfortunately, you can't animate it.
This has nothing to do with the menu-button-background. They use an animated scorebar-colour.png

There are a lot of possibilities on that one, excluding the quoted reply. One of them is an animated scorebar-color
The other one is scorebar-bg. Though scorebar-bg doesn't support animation, it is possible to put an image just below scorebar-color, unless skin behavior changed.
