It's quite simple, and DotAbuff had it coming for a while:
Valve have a public service that allows programmers to retrieve match data from DotA 2. It's a little unreliable, and it's kinda buggy at times, but it mostly works.
DotAbuff decided that they didn't want to use that method, and instead chose to do a legally-questionable method of fooling the Valve servers into thinking that the DotAbuff site was in fact a player. They then retrieved data that way. They did constantly update Valve as to what they were doing, and were told that they'd be allowed to do this as long as they didn't publish their data collection bot.
Now that DotAbuff are making their own ranking system, Valve decided that they'd taken their privilege too far, and disabled their bot. Fair enough really, because they're a third-party that are abusing a security bug in the DotA servers. DotAbuff feel like they've been betrayed, as they were told they were allowed to use this bug, which is also fair enough. DotAbuff have now been brought down from their exalted status (being the only people allowed to exploit a security bug like that _ever_) to the status of all the other developers who, like good people, use the public service that Valve has provided. Granted, it's not perfect, and it's a work in progress, and DotAbuff are pissed about that.
But the buff guys (see what I did there ) need to realise that it was always going to happen, and it's better that it happened now than later.
