these are all good suggestions, maybe if you're planning on doing 3D you could go for Blender instead. Audacity is a good free option for editing audio.

Any photoediting program that can support transparency will allow you to do skins.
Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.Net, Krita etc.
