Hello dear Osu players.

First of all, this is my first post and i don't know if i've chosen the correct sub-forum, so don't kill me please.

Now, i know this isn't a new question. It probably arise thousands of times already. How do i get better at Osu? Well, i'm here to ask the same question. If you're willing to help, keep reading. Otherwise, sorry for wasting your time.

A bit of background:

One day one of my friend told me to play Osu with him. I've heard about this game already, but i never really paid too much interest to it. He eventually convinced me to download it and i started playing. As soon as i found out how many anime-related beatmaps exist i got instantly hooked. What i did tough was probably wrong. I just downloaded beatmaps i liked and played it together with my friend, without paying any attention at all. Attention to what, you ask? Well, i started playing with mouse for aiming and for clicking. Basically i didn't use my keyboard at all. After a couple of days i was already better than my friend (Which isn't really an achievement to be proud of, but at that time i thought i have potential.)

1 or 2 weeks passed, and my friend stopped playing. I don't know why, maybe he was frustrated cause he played Osu longer than i did, or maybe it was something else. Anyways, a couple of days after he stopped playing, i stopped aswell.

Now, lately i've started to play Osu again, even tough alone, it's extremely fun to me. I decided to be a bit ''serious'' about the game this time, and don't just jump into it. So i eventually learned about tablets, xzx, zxz, Tap-X and all that stuff. I thought that the first thing i'd need to do is learn to use my keyboard instead of the mouse for clicking/taping. The ''easy'' maps were no problem for me at all. I can do 3 stars with only using the X key. I decided to try 4 and here arises the problem. There are beats that i can't manage to click fast enough with only the X key. So i tried to start alternating. And wow, i can't even do a 3 Star map with alternating. My coordination is so off, i can't even believe it myself. Let me give an example.

There are 4 fast hitcircles. I'm really offbeat, like i just start randomly spamming my X and Z key. Press them too fast or too slow, Press too much times etc.

I've tried to alternate between x and mouseclick, but that isn't working either. I've asked a couple of good players i met in Osu what to do, and everyone told me different things. So here i am.

What should i do? What do you guys think is the best way to seriously improve in Osu? I know, lots of practice. But i want to start practicing the correct way. I mean, if i play with only mouse for a year, that won't really do me any good since i won't manage to play hard beatmaps. Am i just untalented or did i just start the game ''wrong''? Again, i want to seriously get better, so help would be extremely appreciated.

Does it make sense to get a tablet and start training with that instead of mouse, or should i continue with mouse and keyboard?

I just realized how much i've wrote and how unorganized everything is.

If you've read everything up to here, thanks for taking the time. My native language isn't english, so i'm sorry if there is anything you couldn't understand.

PS:

I know that i didn't play extremely much, but i feel like i should be better than i'm right now.

I am probably not a good reference since I am pretty bad at it myself, you are actually ranked much higher than I am.

But seriously, I do believe that all you can do is practice your maps over and over again until you get the rhythm right.

I just attempted yesterday to start playing using the keyboard for the first time, I've always been a single mouse clicker player, which I was enjoying doing but figured I could at least give it a fair try.

I have experienced the same thing a bit, where when I try to use the keyboard, it does throw me off a bit, I felt that my mouse clicks were more on tune than the keyboard, but I don't think that there is any other way really, to get better at this game than to just keep practicing.

Just keep playing your maps, play them how it feels natural to you, and it'll work.

Just make sure to keep it fun, don't push yourself to a point where it's just about how you perform :)

Sorry that I have to say that, but this:

comes not from using mouse or keyboard or whatever, it just comes from not playing this game long enough. You have ~500 plays and thus you have no real chance to pass any 4 star map whatsoever (unless you are a supernatural talent...).
Practice/play more, get used to the 3 star range (not only barely passing, but FC'ing the maps) and then you will come to the point where you can pass 4 star maps.

Ah and about that "you cant tap fast enough" thing - use alternating for streams and singletap for the rest, with this technique you can get very far in this game. But remember, there is no "this is is"-technique at all... So full alternating will work as well with enough training

(For comparison, I play with this technique and after ~6k plays and half a year I can FC some 4 star maps, pass a lot and fail a lot more... limit at ~4.5 stars for bad pass. So you are really just beginning)

What does FC stands for?

Thank you very much!

get a tablet, get getter at singletapping, learn to alternate streams and triples. Don't play the big black, but don't play maps that you can SS with ease either. Play maps just above your skilllevel, play for A-ranks. Otherwise, just play more.

Everyone has a different playstyle. If you think mouse is the way to go, so shall it be.
If you think alternating is the style that you wanna learn and be good at, then practice more alternating.
Wuxo
Just play and you will get good. There are 4 game modes:
Osu, catch the beat, taiko and mania.
P.s. ctb ftw

Stop acting like these two are equivalent in how long it'd take to improve with them.
They are too different (rely on very different movements and consecutively different muscle memory, issue of absolute vs. relative tracking, mouse drift vs. no mouse drift etc.) to be identical in terms of practicability.

The leaderboards seem to suggest that tablet is the more viable option, and conversely, that mouse is the inferior option.
He asked how to get better, so I won't keep quiet about the great likelihood of tablet being the better option of the two.

I am unsure how that plays out when looking at alternating vs. singletapping. I suppose he should just get better at both, although I made the experience that alternating is harder to pick up on since it requires more coordination.

I didn't say anything like that LOL
I don't get it tho, the way you put it is as tho mouse sucks
It's entirely his choice if he wants to get a tablet. I'm just saying if he wants to continue with a mouse then go ahead. If he wants to spend money to buy a tablet then go ahead.

If you didn't, then you missed the entire point of this thread and my response. He asked for the most efficient way, I answered with that in mind.

It is not about what people think is the better option, because it is to be expected that one of the option is better than the other, objectively, regardless of what they think. The two are too different to be exactly the same in terms of efficiency. Looking at our top-players, it seems reasonable to assume that tablet is the better option to pick.

to elaborate a bit on that.

People only playing 3 star songs for SS-ranks don't get as good as people that always challenge themselves by playing maps that are a bit harder than what they played before.

We observe: One way is more efficient than the other.

If someone asks what way is more efficient, and you only reply "play more", then you didn't understand his question. There are different ways to play. "Play more" is the most obvious thing to do, and therefore also the answer with the least informational value to him.
Piine
I do agree with Railey2 on this case. No offense to mouse players, but if you are not using a mouse that isn't for games entirely, then wouldn't a tablet would work better in said case (seeing it's range and efficiency) unless you with to give yourself a bit of a challenge.

To be honest, people should get over the mouse vs tablet situation. Pretty much preference at the end of the day with the fact that Tablets in efficiency will always be probably better then mouse.

Hey guys.

Thanks for all the answers. The guide that someone posted on the first page was really helpful.

I got myself a tablet last friday. I needed some time to adjust it and get used to it, but it's pretty fun to play with.

Am i doing the right thing when i play 4 star maps which i can NOT pass and use No Fail? I feel like this might lead to some bad habits. For example, when it get's too fast for me i find myself randomly pressing x and y to hit some of the notes. So the question is if playing maps i can't pass using No Fail is the right choice?

Also, i've got around 1200 plays now. I can pass ALMOST all 3 star maps. There are some i can't just yet. On the other hand there are some i can get a FC. I also can pass some 4 star maps already. Is this about where i should be with 1200 plays? Am i in the average or am i doing worse?

Thanks
Piine
Well seeing a play w/ a No Fail mod is still ranked, it will still affect your accuracy in the long run (if you actually care about it.) If you do, I would recommend not using NF anymore.

Welp, it's been 3 months me playing osu! too though, you'll improve :v

I don't really care too much about that if i can manage to become better by doing so. It will eventually rise again if i really get better.

Thanks. For the time being i'll just continue playing. :)
digitaku
you can practice your brain with music's beats
I mean try to understand the music, like when it gonna slow, or when it gonna fast, or "how many time i've got to click this beat so it can match the rhythm" (maybe you could try play some music instrument to understand the beat)

that's my practice personally... ;)
get it? no, well I'm not good at english, sorry :c
