The osu hive mind

So, pewdiepie played osu.

The osu-communities general response regarding this has been overwhelmingly negative, ranging from mildly expressed disapproval to open hostility and hate.

#osu has been going nuts for hours. Insult after insult being gushed out, beyond hope or moderation.

To tackle the core of the matter: Is pewdiepies fanbase younger than the osu-community? Not necessarily, but even if:
Does this difference in average age and the correlation between young age and immaturity legitimize disdainful behavior towards the pewdie-com?

I suspect that the current development was not the result of people asking themselves this question, and then, after thoughtfully calculating the pros and cons, coming to the rational conclusion, that hate is the best tool to drive these children away for the sake of saving the community.
After questioning around 5 of the people that spammed "cancer", none of them had discernible views as to why they did it.
I came to the conclusion, that the majority of hateful people merely jumped on the bandwagon of hate, without thinking about reasons or consequences - a classical example of hive mind behavior.

Why do people jump on the bandwagon? Because it feels good. It feels good to create an out-group by labeling them and sharing that label (pewdie-fans), then blatantly generalizing over this out-group (they are all 12 year old kids and immature), and then lastly hate on that out-group while feeling that the own group shares a common cause.
It is about being part of a movement and feeling superior by putting others down.

The thing that gets me is, that the people who flame #osu to death and use "cancer" in every 3rd sentence to refer to said children, exhibit the traits that they despise so much themselves.
It is not exactly a mark of maturity to slander a group of interested and open children on the basis that THEY might be close to the raging CS kid stereotype.

To wrap it up:

If you act that way, you aren't exactly setting a good example. If you complain about young new players being cancerous per se, you are the cancer. You make people feel unwanted, when all they want is to try out a fun new game, enjoy the music and maybe make some friends in the progress.

This day delivered a particularly ugly example of how hive-minds can pull in an ugly direction, without logical basis or thought, unified and driven by the common interest in feelings of superiority, elicited by defaming an innocent group by accusing them of being cancerous in their totality over and over again.

Well done.

And I don't doubt that they are. This post is targeted not at the whole of the osu community, but at the people that did jump on the bandwagon. I can't say if it was the majority, but skimming through youtube, reddit and #osu, I can say that they weren't "just" a loud minority. There was really a lot of hate. So much, that I wanted to address it. There have been people that dealt with the influx of new players in a helpful and constructive manner as well, of course, but this post is not about them.

So in the end we are all cancer and after this nothing changes?

Not like it changes anything for me. I doubt any significant amount will even be active on the forums.

well yeah thats sort of the thing. Realistically, it never had or will have the potential to become a problem. This thread. however, is more about the communities temporary response as an interesting (and rage-inducing) psychological phenomenon.

The hive mind arose, showed its most ugly side, and then dissipated because there was no set structure in place to keep it going. It's not like there are smart people here to institutionalize hate for their own questionable moral views, or simply their own benefit.

To shorten this. Whole osu! situation is pretty much a huge bumblefuck of trolling and the community "such as Felix directly said" being shit. It funny how they say the community got worse, because if I remember the community, it already was shit after post-2012. No offense to the people who don't belong in the shit-catagory.
abraker
Beautifully said! Reasonable minds knew nothing would happen, but then there are some screwed minds that want to believe something will happen. We all know pewdiepie would not cause anything bad to the game, but the jerks who think that kinda already shot themselves in the foot by damaging the reputation of the community.

Everything is cancer in this world at this point
Destiny
I can't stand people who try and speak for an entire community as demonstrated by the child who tweeted at pewdiepie. It's a real shame when people just have to shit on anything remotely pleasant.
Lapoozza
I can't say much but I can say this with all honesty.

I was trying to convince my friends to play osu! from the day I joined. What I wasn't able to do for the past 2 months, pdp's video did it instantly.
Myxo
The osu! community is not cancer per-se. They just like to create drama over nothing drama-worthy, but it will be over soon enough if it isn't already.
Faust
Hm.

>Man Pewds is such a cancerous guy
>What ? He's playing osu! ? He's just uploaded the video ???
>HOW DARE YOU BRING YOUR CANCER TO MY CANCER.

I expected nothing less of the general response. Sure enough.
Sey
I thought the first Thread about this topic was enough already, but apparently not. All this Pdp fanbase bashing is getting comedic value already, lol.
Yuzeyun
finally a quality thread about this this post is pointless

Yeah, definitely agree with that. Most people have no clue about the game and would want to simply play it, some watch it just because they like him as a youtuber, to entertain themselves. Pewds is a let's player who happened to sorta like music games and has recorded a video of it, what's the matter? People just want to have fun watching him, why deny every newcomer caused by Pewds' video ? Is his community THAT bad ? I doubt so.

I was one of those who feared what ACTUALLY happened, that is osu!community going dumpshit about this. I knew what was bound to happen right after he announced he had recorded.

Calling a community cancer doesn't make you much of a person. You're just being a jerkass to an innocent community because you can't accept that somebody who happened to have 40 million subscribers played a game and interested some people. If it was Kwebbelkop (2.4M), Squeezie (4.7M), or anyone who has less subscibers, you wouldn't give a flippin' fuck about that.

To get back to the actual hive mind subject, it exists practically everywhere in this community. Mappers get hated for no apparent reason, some individuals get shittalked all the time... And that's going on all the time, always showing its worst side.

-----

TL;DR The video just showed us the obvious, but made more people conscious of what's happening internally of the community - that is: pointless hating because of a few individuals that are idolized by the masses. Imagine that Cookiezi had appeared next to him, they would have STFU.

Some people overreacted negatively to PewDiePie's video and how toxic is PewDiePie's immature fanbase (some) community, yet their reaction is already toxic.

There are reasons why you could give a shit.

1. when you are part of a community (you have more forum posts than me, even), you always get associated with it
2. Toxicity within the community weakens the influx of new users, but new users are needed in every dynamic community to keep it alive and interesting
3. Idiots can make your life worse, directly. Personally, I'd rather have nice people around..

We'll see what happens, I might join if it sticks. At this point I just see it as you guys throwing a tantrum over the new forum design despite it still being beta and general animosity towards peppy.

As you can see, I'm active on both of them. I just enjoy being on forums tbh. I don't care to a degree where I see this alternative forum as means of exerting pressure on peppy (not that this would work anyways, haha). For me, it's just another place to be around in whatever manner I see fit. No tantrum no nothing. Take a look when you're interested, stay away when you're not, easy as that.
Green Platinum
I've seen it, It just doesn't have anything I come to the osu forums for anyway.
NaTha
eehh well Pewds played osu!.

it freaking dosent make the game better or worse
Syphist
I thought it was pretty cool he brought attention to the game. TBH people that act like cancer on either side are just gonna make it worse. Why can't we just welcome the new members and show them the proper way to act? People will try to fit in, so they'll act the way the community acts. If people just spam and hate they will think this community is ok with it. I may not like PewDiePie, but I give the guy major props. He has made so much money in such a genuine way and seems like a nice guy. It's not his fault his fanbase looks so immature. That's just my 2 cents.
