Because why not. It might have been requested before, but just in case it hasn't been here you go.

Examples:

Online: Wolf (WubWoofWolf)

Offline: AzerFrost (Azer)

It's small, but people could have a lot of fun with this.

Might as well add it on the forums by users' posts and their profiles, only visible to you of course.

Nah
Will really be confusing, especially with quotings

Confusing? You are choosing the names yourself, if you picked a confusing name and it's bothering you just change it again.
I mean I probably wouldn't use it, but it could be fun and also useful to keep track of someone on your friend list who keeps changing his/her name.

At forums
If you quote someone the 'real' name is shown
What if it's a friend of you, but you don't know that's the current name (because of recent name change)

lol then just delete the nickname and tada, done complaining

or maybe show a small text below the profile's username that showing a nickname? that's easy, now you know its current username

Please re-read what I said

You quoted me, it said: "Baraatje123 wrote"
You gave me the nickname B123
Then I change my name drastically to RandomName
If you see "RandomName wrote" you have no idea who it is
And as it's a forum, not a updating web-site, the forum can't display the nickname in the post

You just quoted him, how do you not know who you are quoting?

...

You're not serious I hope. I meant that if someone quoted me, how will the one who gave me a nickname know it's me if he just sees a quote drom RandomName
This might not be that bad in thread-quotes, but for quotes from other threads, there is no way to know

Also, how about 'Nicknames' which are the same as othernames
That'll make it even more confusing

Good luck reading the whole post, a little hard with all the invisible letters

How about the option of leaving the nickname the same as the regular name that "x" player had at the time? If you don't bother to change it like that, it'll stay the same forever, similar to the way TeamSpeak friends work. For example, Say WubWoofWolf changed his name back to White Wolf for some odd reason, if you friended him as WubWoofWolf it would say White Wolf (WubWoofWolf) or something similar.

that pretty much solves all of the other problems you had in mind too, you're kind of making a mountain out of a molehill so~

To attempt to clear things up so everyone can understand what Baraatje is saying. Its basically this kinda've scenario:
You give a friend a nickname. (Bob)
This friend is displayed with his nickname all the time. (Bob)
You quote this friend, and his original username (Definitely not Bob) says "Definitely not Bob wrote:"
Your friend changes his name, his username is now Joey. Joey (previously known as Definitely not Bob) writes a controversial post on the forums. It is displayed as "Joey wrote" in the forums. Tons of people start quoting Joey (previously known as Definitely not Bob), expressing their opinion about what he said. This goes on for several pages. Joey hasn't been back to respond to the quotes. You visit this thread where Joey (previously known as Definitely not Bob) has been quoted a million times and you have no way of knowing who Joey is w/o visiting his profile and checking what his actual username is (Bob is currently displayed, so you would have to check for his actual username in w/e way).

^^
Thanks for clearing it up :3

But what does this have to do with the suggested feature here? This is a problem regardless of assigned nicks or not. Am I missing something? oO

edit:
Also, how about 'Nicknames' which are the same as othernames

good point

How about forcing names with a player's game ID? So if name had changed, it would be hypertexted with the user's ID?

This might be a good idea, actually :3
drum drum
this reminds me of steam's nickname system

for the forums you could have some sort of text attachment that labels them that nickname rather than changing their name completely
