I've been searching for a same post and didn't find, also asked in the skinning thread if it could be currently possible but it seems not.
My idea would be to show in the osu!mania mode more column that are actually played. For instance, if the player plays a 4K song, they could choose to see 7 columns even if only the 4 in the center are actually used in this song.
The option could be like "Minimal number of column displayed : 5/6/7/8" (of course, if 5 is selected, a 6K songs would always have 6 column displayed)
I think this could be awesome to help us get used to a higher number of column than we are comfortable with. As I play rather well in 4K, I'm not able to do such things in 7K even if there is in a portion of the song only 4 column used. It could also stop mindblowing me when I switch from 4K/6K to 5K/7K because of the center key that split my two forefingers.
