Err... what's the policy on duplicates?

I got about halfway making a beatmap for The Price of Freedom before considering the possibility that someone else had done it before I had -- and indeed, someone HAD done it before I had. However, their version of the song is cut short, (ending at 1:36) while the one I'm using is considerably longer (3:41). In addition, our approaches to the song are so different as to be almost completely opposite.

However, the previous one is already ranked. Is there a precedent for this? Should I bother finishing it? Mine would fill a gap that the currently-up one doesn't occupy, in that it's fair bit harder, not to mention a way longer version of the song (I was including quite a few breaks)... but I imagine you don't want tons of duplicate songs floating around... Anyone know?

IIRC I asked the same question in chat the other day, and the general idea is that there currently isn't a policy against ranking a beatmap that uses the same song as another ranked beatmap, especially it has a different length or difficulty versions. I think there are two Ready Steady Go's ranked, as well as two openings of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, for example. Just make sure it's a good beatmap and different than the one already ranked, and it should be approved, I think.

Yup, continue on with your mapping. Don't worrying about it being a duplicate, especially since it's completely different.

Having 3 or more of the same map probably won't happen, though. ;x

If it's a different version of the song entirely (as is the case here) then I wouldn't be worried at all.

In the event you want to do a song that's already been mapped and ranked, all I can say is:

A - the timing on the old map is probably correct (or damn well near close enough) so go with it
B - just make sure you do a really good job on your (unique) version of the beatmap, and everyone is happy.

Yay! Glad to know. I guess I'll just have to work extra-hard on it ^_^;
