I've had this issue quite a lot when checking samples in a mapset between difficulties.
Say we have a map with a lot of samples imported via the Sample Import function of the editor (as an example, this one https://osu.ppy.sh/s/238297 , but it works on any maps with samples imported.)
If we just click the play button now, the song / map is played, and all the hitsounds and samples along with it.
However, if we open another difficulty using Open Difficulty -> For Reference, then click play again, the samples imported within the sample importer are silent. However, the standard hitsounds such as C/W/F/hitnormals still are played.
It isn't a major issue I suppose since in test mode it's fine, it's only an editor based thing - although it does become quite annoying when checking for sample consistency across a mapset.
This was tested using both the latest version of stable and cutting edge builds (20150220cuttingedge).
Example using the cutting edge build: (exactly the same in stable)
