So, because I'm musically ADD, I'm constantly looking for new music recommendations. I figured that having a thread for this will open the discussion for anyone curious.
There are no limits to what you can post in this thread, but I'd like for there to be some structure. So, when constructing your post, I'd kindly like posts to follow the following guidelines...
With that all being said, I'll give a suggestion to start, not just to give an example, but to also make a serious recommendation.
There are no limits to what you can post in this thread, but I'd like for there to be some structure. So, when constructing your post, I'd kindly like posts to follow the following guidelines...
- List the artist name.
- List the genre (correct genre, please, not what your intuition tells you it is).
- A link to a page for the artist, whether it'd be a MySpace or Soundclick or something along those lines. Just as long as it's their official site.
- List redeeming qualities of the artist, what makes them so good, whether it's the lyrical structure, the way the music itself is constructed, stuff along those lines.
- Examples of their music on an external source.
With that all being said, I'll give a suggestion to start, not just to give an example, but to also make a serious recommendation.
- Artist: The New Pornographers
- Genre: Indie pop/rock
- Their main website
- If you like Neko Case, you'll definitely love The New Pornographers, since she is a member. However, that's not the main draw to them. I find their sound to be delightfully catchy, with a pop structure most artists wish they had. It is a standard pop-rock structure done in a way that just sounds absolutely appealing, probably due to the amount of variety they have, with multiple vocalists (of both genders and styles that meld easily) and guitarists, keyboard/synthesizer, and at points, horns and cello. Lyrically, they have a roundabout way of doing things at points. They can describe things using colourful metaphors/similies while leaving the actual meaning of a song cryptic. They are pop music that is actually intellectual. This is something I can fully get behind.
- Examples: Mass Romantic, Challengers, The Electric Version, Sing Me Spanish Techno
