So, because I'm musically ADD, I'm constantly looking for new music recommendations. I figured that having a thread for this will open the discussion for anyone curious.

There are no limits to what you can post in this thread, but I'd like for there to be some structure. So, when constructing your post, I'd kindly like posts to follow the following guidelines...
  1. List the artist name.
  2. List the genre (correct genre, please, not what your intuition tells you it is).
  3. A link to a page for the artist, whether it'd be a MySpace or Soundclick or something along those lines. Just as long as it's their official site.
  4. List redeeming qualities of the artist, what makes them so good, whether it's the lyrical structure, the way the music itself is constructed, stuff along those lines.
  5. Examples of their music on an external source.
I would like to try to keep track of suggestions here on this first post, so artist repeats are not mentioned. You can add your support to previously added artists if you'd like, though.

With that all being said, I'll give a suggestion to start, not just to give an example, but to also make a serious recommendation.

  1. Artist: The New Pornographers
  2. Genre: Indie pop/rock
  3. Their main website
  4. If you like Neko Case, you'll definitely love The New Pornographers, since she is a member. However, that's not the main draw to them. I find their sound to be delightfully catchy, with a pop structure most artists wish they had. It is a standard pop-rock structure done in a way that just sounds absolutely appealing, probably due to the amount of variety they have, with multiple vocalists (of both genders and styles that meld easily) and guitarists, keyboard/synthesizer, and at points, horns and cello. Lyrically, they have a roundabout way of doing things at points. They can describe things using colourful metaphors/similies while leaving the actual meaning of a song cryptic. They are pop music that is actually intellectual. This is something I can fully get behind.
  5. Examples: Mass Romantic, Challengers, The Electric Version, Sing Me Spanish Techno
Detective Tuesday
Artist: Jay Electronica
Genre: Hip-Hop
Check it: http://www.myspace.com/jayelectronica
Why is Jay Electronica the truth? Jay Electronica is very unconventional in the way he's been putting out music. Back in 2007, he dropped a mixtape entitled "Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge)", on which he demonstrates a unique lyrical style over samples of the soundtrack to "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Not many hip-hop artists are willing to go all the way left field like Jay did on this tape, so the astonishing sound of this movement is new and immersive. Jay only has two official singles, "Exhibit A (Transformations)" and "Exhibit C", the latter of which is one of the most amazingly well written and epic pieces I've heard in a long time... Honestly, when describing an artist I like, I feel like it's impossible for my words to do their work justice. And so:
Examples: On his MySpace page: "the pledge" (A version of Act I without the spoken intro by Erykah Badu and Just Blaze), "Exhibit A (Transformations)", and "Exhibit C", A Million in the Morning. There's a lot more Jay out there in the form of single releases and unofficial mixtapes, but no full length albums announced as of now.

Powerdrone
Artist: Asobi Seksu
Genre: Shoegaze
Website: http://www.myspace.com/asobiseksu
Info: I find that Asobi Seksu's music has a relaxing quality to it, but that might be just me. =P The lead singer has an entrancing voice, and the lyrics are sometimes in Japanese, English, or a mix of both.
Examples: Strawberries, Transparence, Thursday, Pink Cloud Tracing Paper.

Explode "Asobi Seksu" -> Jap. "Asobi" -> Pol. "Seksu" * (Noun, Case: Celownik, Gender: Neutral) -> Zabawa z seksu -> Fun from sex.
* - Noun, Case: Mianownik, Gender: Male would be "Seks" -> "Sex" in English.

Sorry for offtop, couldn't hold back.
The_Priest_In_Yellow
  1. Artist: Mat P. Jarvis ( a.k.a Gas / High Skies )
  2. Genre: Electronic Music
  3. Site: Microscopics (Basically his label.)
  4. Description: Why electronic music, don't I usually listen to metal ?
I came across this on youtube while looking for something astronomy related and thought to myself 'hey, this is kinda cool.' The music features nearly no lyrics, what could be considered lyrics are basically voice-overs, such as Carl Sagan's voice featured in Voyage en Argent on the Sounds of Earth EP. The music in itself is hard for me to put into words, there are tracks as long as 16 minutes which might put some people off. However I have never found the music repetitive enough to warrant skipping to the next track.

To describe it best, put it in this context : A movie about the cosmos, the beginnings of life on our 4.5 billion year old planet and what lies ahead of us in terms of the discoveries we might face in our exploration of space. It's complex and involving, you'd probably do yourself a favor to just check the examples rather than reading this though.

In short, well worth the money, for which you can get a FLAC version for 2 bucks more. If you enjoy instrumental music and don't have any grudges against "synthetic" sound that is.
  5. Examples: The Shape of Things to Come | Microscopic
Ph0X
+1 for Gas 0095 & High Skies

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Artist: Burial
  2. Genre: ambient, minimal, electronic, dubstep
  3. Site: Myspace - Wiki
  4. Description: I've been into this kind of dubstep for couple weeks only, and I find it great for when I'm working in Photoshop or coding.
It's slightly like what TPIY posted, but slightly more upbeat. Very disordered beat with strange noises.

  1. Artist: Pogo
  2. Genre: Electronica, Ambient, Tranc-ish Rework/Resample
  3. Site: Website - Myspace - Youtube
  4. Description: His actual music is hard trance, but I personally don't recommend his old work. It's good and all, but nothing special about it. He's mainly known for the resampled songs he make, as seen on his Youtube channel. They have a very nice sound and uplifting melody.
  5. Examples: Alice | Upular | Gardyn
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  2. Genre: Indie pop, Electropop
  3. Site: Website - Myspace - Youtube

  5. Examples: Burial | Silvia | Animal

  1. Artist: Freshcut
  2. Genre: minimal, ambient, electronic, dubstep
  3. Site: Website - Myspace
  4. Description: Beautiful minimal music. Very dreamy, magical, barealic. Also has a subtle dubstep flavor to it, like burial. A lot of sounds from nature too, which makes it even more relaxing.
  5. Examples: Northern Lights | Lonely in Paradise | Orange Sunshine
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Artist: Red Sparowes
  2. Genre: Post-rock, progressive, soundscape
  3. Site: Website - Myspace
  4. Description: His tracks start off slow and slightly boring, but they have an amazing progression, up until a final climax, and then back down.
  5. Examples: A Swarm | A Hail of Bombs

That'll be all for now~

idk if I've mentioned these guys to you before

  1. Artist: Ram-Zet
  2. Genre: Gothic Avant-garde Metal
  3. Site: http://www.ram-zet.com
  4. Description: Ram-Zet have a beautiful back-and-forth sort of sound. Like most gothic-styled metal, there's play between female and male vocalists, however, with Ram-Zet it's more than just "a male vocalist and a female vocalist". This is especially apparent in the concept album Escape, which tells the story of a mental patient and his relationship with one of the nurses. Throughout the album, and much in the band's style in general, there's a bit of a schizophrenic theme; the music is often expressing a sort of inescapable insanity, or separation from reality.

    And there's bitchin' violins, too.

If you're interested in checking them out, I highly recommend starting with Escape. Not only is it a great introduction to their style, but it's a delightful concept album. And we all love the concept of concept albums. Not a collection of songs, but an entire piece with a unified theme and an underlying story to tell.
  5. Examples: http://www.myspace.com/ramzetofficial - there are some bite-sized music videos here, but keep in mind you're not getting the whole experience with them: Ram-Zet tracks are pretty consistent time-wise and average a ripe 8 minutes per song. Also be warned, the violinist halfway through the Queen video may give you nightmares. She kind of creeps me out.
