Is it OK to hit the big notes as normal notes?

I'm starting to learn Taiko, and the one thing I still can't do at all is hit combos that have big notes in them (don't know the actual name of them sorry). Like if it's a kDk kDk pattern where the D is a big red one, I'll almost always fail it. I just tried playing a map ignoring the big notes and just hitting them with one finger instead of both, and I immediately went from a C to an S.

Is it really bad to always do this? Playing big notes with one finger only gives you slightly less score, but doesn't affect accuracy/pp that much right? Are they even common in harder maps, or do harder maps tend to just be hard patterns?

You should learn to play patterns with finishers. There are pretty much no 1/4 patterns that have finishers in them with ranked taiko maps, so take a look around there for easier maps.

The amount of points you lose is actually pretty significant (iirc double value of the note) so not hitting them is a huge score decrease once you get better.

Well seeing as pp doesn't get affected by score iirc, you won't have to worry about actually hitting big notes to progress in global ranks. But if you want to get individual ranks on songs big notes will be required for top scores. Same goes for if you are wanting to get into tournament play. (Because highest score wins)

Talking about the big notes, do we get the highest score possible if we get 100% acc when there's no sliders, even if we don't hit all the big dons and kats?

uh, read the posts, you get twice as many points hitting finishers properly

Not hitting them properly is like getting 2x100 so if I was you I'd try to practice hitting them right from the start if you want a higher map rank/more score (pp isn't effected since it doesn't effect your accuracy)

You'll see the less frustrating ones in Taiko specific difficulties and over time you'll learn to hit 100% of them, however converts tend to put them all over the place like right in the middle of 240bpm streams or at the beginning of a pattern
