Bad apple hasn't always existed, it has been most played since I joined though
And before that it was a different K-ON song.
People grew tired of Bad Apple and moved on to the next fad. That's just how we roll on this planet.

Here's the thing, I actually DON'T think these players actually think "Oh I love this song, automatic 10 stars!". The song is a major factor in the enjoyability of a map; if you were to play two completely identical maps but one was to a song you didn't like and one is to a song you do, you are going to have more fun playing the latter. So even in the map itself isn't spectacular, the players who like the song are going to play it and enjoy it anyway. They aren't consciously ignoring map quality and voting for their favourite song - the song choice just makes the map's experience better.
Another factor that I think effect the most played map are how famous the source is
Touhou series despite being an original game made by one person, are quite famous for its gameplay? and music.
And then animes, the only reason I can think why anime songs are famous is because most of osu! player are anime lover ( either hardcore or not).
I'm not sure, but aren't those anime lover will most likely hesitate to play any songs unrelated to anime?

It also depends on your experience I think. If you have played a lot of maps and you know a good map from a bad one, then obviously you aren't gonna like a poor map to a good song. But for the newer players who don't have as much to compare to, the fun mostly comes from playing a map to their favourite song, as opposed to the map itself.RL Link wrote:

well i do sometimes remap some ranked songs and made it mine and MINE only 
which its sucks because i didn't know about mapping regulations before
