but gimp or anything that allows cropping/resizing will work

Well you can use anything to resize the avatar, the avatar size is 128x128

I usually have mine at 200x200 now, I think it's the file size that counts more, towards those restrictions .

I captured mine using puush from a game I was playing and just uploaded it \o/ Seems to have worked out fine.
