1. Mushishi (all seasons) - The most relaxing show you will ever watch. Excellent worldbuilding and ambience.
2. Revolutionary Girl Utena - Symbolism done right. The show doesn't look too special early on, but as you keep watching you get this sense of foreboding and start wondering just how deep the rabbit hole goes. Surprisingly dark and deals with some very difficulty themes (mostly related to adolescence and developing sexuality).
3. Princess Tutu - Don't let the seemingly childish and cutesy pink design turn you off - this is not your average shoujo story at all. If you enjoy shows like Madoka, this is most likely for you. The best description of this anime I have ever heard is that it's not about fairy tales and ballet, it basically is a ballet that tells a fairy tale. Slow, but well paced; very melancholic and bittersweet.
4. One Outs - I don't even know the rules to baseball, but this anime is just cool. Tokuchi Toua is the biggest badass in any animated work ever (TTGL and JoJo don't even compare, come at me fanboys). Sure, there are some quite apparent issues with the series, but I find it easy to turn a blind eye since it's just so incredibly fun to watch. You like characters like Light from Death Note? Watch this.
5. Eve no Jikan - Relaxing slice of life with some social commentary. Since this is a very short show (5 episodes at 15-20 minutes each and a final 30 minute episode), there is also a movie version. I suggest watching the ONA series though, one episode a day - this is not a show that you should rush through in my opinion. Just lean back and enjoy.

1. Princess Mononoke - The most epic of all the Ghibli movies, and probably Miyazaki's most mature work. From action scenes to calm environmentalist messages - this movie covers a lot of ground and does so flawlessly. I consider this one a must-watch for all anime fans.
2. 5 Centimeters per Second - I guess this is my anime "guilty pleasure". It's not technically anything special, but it just resonated with me - and judging from its popularity, I am not alone in that position. The ending is very predictable, but I think that's kind of neccessary for this movie to work. Oh, and as with all Makoto Shinkai works, this has gorgeous art and animation.
3. La Maison en Petits Cubes - 12 minute short film. Won an Oscar for a reason. Watch it now, at that length you have no excuses.
4. Spirited Away - Most of you will have probably seen this already as it's the most successful Ghibli/Miyazaki movie in the west. What can I say, this movie just creates a fascinating and vibrant fantasy world with a simple but well executed plot. This and La Maison en Petits Cubes are the only anime to ever be awarded an Oscar.
5. Colorful - Slow paced, slice-of-life-y story about the meaning of life, dealing with grief, finding your place in society, and similar topics. Not quite as good as the book it's based on, but still very much worth a watch.

1. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade - Grimdark story in a dystopian setting. A bit overly pretentious at times, but still gives you stuff to think about.

I know we have a rule against hating on anime's people like but there must be some threshold where it is acceptable to laugh at a joke. Maken-Ki is the important one here although the others.....
