I have only been playing for just under 2 months and still don't get how this works can someone explain it to me? Should I be aiming to SS maps or just playing a bunch atm the only scores I have are S and SS because that's all I will accept I just restart the map as many times as it takes to get S or SS not sure if that's what I should be doing because I only have 300pp and I see others with like pp in the thousands.

play more difficult beatmaps

High accuracy or SS gives a lot of pp, so it would never hurt to get more SS, but you don't wanna keep retrying for SS if you can't even get 98% accuracy easily.

What difficulty would you recommend because the "Recommended Difficulty" beatmap filter recommends me like 2 star maps but the majority of my 2 star maps I have SS should I go into the 3 star difficulty maps because I wanted to beat all the <3 star maps I have before I did but I guess I could just not do that.

Also what rank should I be by now I've been playing 2 months and I'm still like way up near 200,000 which doesn't seem to good my mate is like 50,000 and he hasn't played that long I think.

Time played isn't a good measure, playcount / total score is more accurate. Dw, you are fine, I think of rank this way:
1 digit: God
2 digit: Good
3 digit: Meh
4 digit: Shit
≥5 digit: Really shit
So according to that, you and your friend are on the same level.

Srs though, you only have 3.4k playcount and 1 billion total score, ofc you haven't gone very far. Only going for SS or S might make you play maps that are too comfortable for you to play, and you won't get that far playing only easy - normal maps, even with DT + HR. Try playing hards and insanes in the 3.5+ star range, as long as you aren't mashing mindlessly and are actually attempting to play and read the map properly and know what you are doing, then you will still improve. Raniemi only goes for SS, and does only have SS, and he's gotten pretty damn far doing so (Further than me, and with less total score as well), but it's a much harder playstyle. If you enjoy only going for S / SS, then keep doing it, just don't expect to improve as fast / easily.

I wouldn't say "only 3.4k", I find that quite a lot of plays already... At any rate, to get a better rank, keep playing maps that are a bit of a challenge. You don't need to play them until you get SS, just play them until you get a decent score. If you only play easy songs, your skills will hardly improve. And once your skills have improved enough, you can try to get better scores or scores with modifiers from your earlier scores, if you feel like it.

Yeah actually I agree with this, but for total plays, 3.4k isn't a lot since the first couple thousand is when you are still learning the most about the game.

If you say so. I can't even remember the start of my osu! days cough cough ow my back plus I had rhythm game experience when I started so I can't really tell how much you would normally need to play to get out of the total newbie phase.

Back to topic, you don't even need to S maps or even get a fullcombo to get pp if it just is difficult enough. So you could try out songs you can barely pass too, and then once you're better, just fix the scores you got from those songs to milk even more pp out of them.

I have seen some people get a 4 digit rank with less than 5k playcount before (and still cri everytim) but generally, me and most of my friends, and most people I have seen really didn't have that much experience at 3k playcount.

I might try and go for S rather then SS more often but I am just not the type of person who can handle getting anything below S it just ticks me off greatly for some reason.

I'm the same, which is exactly why I later on fix those scores instead of letting them just be. I usually hit Esc and reurn to menu without uploading my score if it's too bad, for example less than 98% from a easy song or less than 95% from a harder one. There's no way you'll improve much by repeating the same easy thing over and over again, so you have to try harder songs.

Or, you could stop caring about pp and rank if you just enjoy playing the game they way you do now? Doesn't sound too bad to me.

It's not necessarily the grade you're going for, you should just try pushing yourself and playing harder maps, I'm sure you could still achieve an S on them.

I think that you need to play more hard maps or insane maps. It should help you more for PP & rank. SS or S is not really matter for that, as long as you can FC it
