So, couple hours ago, Link said "why did portal just update" in vent, but I checked in the steam news and saw this:
"Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations"
I didn't get it.

Now, I check my RSS and see this post from shacknews:
Mysterious Portal Patch Adds Achievement, Confusion

Update 2: Steam users have found 26 new sound files containing around 17 minutes of Morse code. The first file has been translated to read: "interior transmission active external data line active message digest active". Something big is going on.
Am I the only thinking that this might somehow be related to HL2:Ep3? Since it was supposed to have Borealis and stuff in this.

Anyways, there's definitely something behind all this, we will find out soon!

EDIT: The morse is posted at the end of that article

So, apparently the sounds in the GCF are images encoded into sound.
They pretty much all kinda show formulas and shit

I just remembered why I love Valve.
Edit: Disregard that, it's a love/hate relationship. Steam refuses to update Portal.

Try changing your update server?

I've tried switching back to the old version of Steam, verifying the game cache, switching to a US update server, restarting both Steam and my computer several times and even deleting and redownloading the entire game. And then verifying the game cache again. Still at the old version.

There is a phone number in these photos which were ripped from sound files.

here are people doing random things with BBS and other shit with a modem connection.

Holy shit valve

How long were you planning this

Indeed.
This is a pretty complex ARG they've set up, and it's honestly the best way to get people hyped up.
Although, I'm not sure how to feel about the "no new hl games in 2010".
I highly doubt that Valve would be teasing about something that isn't going to come out anytime soon.
They aren't like fucking BMS, showing off their shit and still not having a release date 3years later.
Usually, when they start advertising about something, it means that it's coming out in max 6 month.
Just like l4d2 being advertized in june and coming out in november.

But yea, those ascii definitely look very interseting

I hadn't seen an ARG this big since "What's inside the box"

no, you missed my ~90 minute binge on the subject (around noon today)

I went through a 35 or so page thread on the Valve forums reading up on everything

it's fucking deep

Half life 2: episode 2 predicted this.

I am extremely impressed by the work done both on Valve's behalf and the community's.

Though it is not unheard of to assume that Portal and HL2 are connected; I mean you find evidence of Aperture science in HL2 and you find evidence of Black Mesa in Portal

so maybe when GLaDOS tries to back herself up through this BBS or modem dialup or what-have-you maybe the signal is sent, either intentionally or accidentally, to the Borealis

And that is why this doesn't seem like a "coincidence" to me.

People are reveling in that thread as if it is some monumental discovery of genius proportions.

and I'm like yeah it was in the game and was not hidden

Well, when i first posted this thread, most of the articles and thread speaked only of the dino thing, and i couldn't see anything about ep3, but yea couple hours after shitload of ep3 stuff came out.

I love how no one is even trying to actually get the achievement.
It's actually pretty challenging, because it consists of, on each level:
1. finding where the radio is hidden
2. finding how to activate it

and you do that on 26 different levels. It gets really hard.

Oh fuck, I'm retarded. Turns out you need to finish the game once and unlock the "Heartbreaker" achievement before you can do this.

BRB, speedrun.

Really? Heh
Yea I already had all 14 achievements before :P

But yea, I got to 15 last night, the first 3 are extremely easy but it suddently gets tricky after.
Once you get the hang of it though, it gets kinda easier.
It honestly adds a whole new level of gameplay to it though.
Honestly, people should learn how to make achievements from Valve. To me, achievements are optional sub-missions, to increase the gameplay, not fucking awards for doing things that you were supposed to do anyway (aka, finish chapter 2 or kill boss).

This is definitely the thing that irritates me the most about current-gen "achievements".

I also hate trophy/achievement fags for this reason.

Slightly related, Steam is coming to the Mac. Looks like Valve is announcing several things in the upcoming weeks.

new update
I checked the gcf myself and saw two new fizz file and another called "partyescort.wav"
on forums, they also found an lmp file for escort2 map.
lmp file is pretty much a map patch, so yea they changed something on the last part of the game. (escape_02 is the last map)

inb4 this entire ARG was just to announce portal for Macs

EDIT: So yea, apparently there's a new ending if you have the achievements, I'm at 19/26, time to finish this :>

I don't like Valve or FPS games but I love it when companies do this. It really gets the fans thinking.

Keep it updated :3

Yea, same. Well... I finished with 23/26 ;__;
I only found like 2 two the escape part :<
I guess you only need the achievements you named previously which enables the radio stuff

EDIT: :>

EDIT2: Lots more progress
Here's a good thread with alot of information
http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=903557

I found the xen skyboxes interesting, because it also goes with the apollo images (space related)
It would also be interesting if the progress bar was actually linked to the number of people who get the achievement.

EDIT3: With extrapolation, the guess is that the progressbar in the BSS will reach 76 characters (complete) march5th at 7:15pm eastern time (which is right about when I get home~).

I was of the same opinion until I played Portal. Give it a chance, you won't be disappointed.

You don't like Valve or Valve games?
I honestly am one of the biggest game haters you will ever meet. I have around 150 games installed and only a rare few that I've actually played for more than 5 minutes. Yet, HL2, ep1, ep2 and portal were games that I've played more than once and I'd recommand to anyone.

Definitely give them a try.

EDIT: Now this is hax. I had hard time believing it, and it still might be bullcrap, but the spectrum of the fizzle sound matches the combine tower O.O

I assume you meant to quote Zerostarry. As for the Combine tower thing, the only real resemblance I see is those cable-like things at the bottom, and they're not even the right shape. The general contour is probably just a coincidence; cut off the bottom and it looks more like a shotgun.

And this is unrelated to the update, but I just noticed something neat: Move your head back and forth while looking at Portal's loading screen.

yep, portal 2 announced

In short:

GameInformer will release new information every two days:
http://gameinformer.com/mag/portal2.aspx

In the Steam Article, the underlined letters added up to "drattmanh0nee" which can be seen as Dr.Attmann or D. Rattmann (the rat man), but can also be used as username password for the BBS (drattmann/h0nee).

after the progressbar was completed, New ascii images were dumped. Also, a code for "aperture image format" decoding, which let's us decode the binary data dumped by the drattmann BBS. They got these images:

EDIT: Hmm, these images are hinting coop?

[quote="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=77276":c814a]Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes.Portal 2 draws from the award-winning formula of innovative gameplay, story, and music that earned the original Portal over 70 industry accolades and created a cult following. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively. Also:

I'll only set my pre-order if it's on steam.
EA takes care of the retail, I don't want a single penny of my money going to them.
Loginer
I'll pre-order it on Steam if they have a 4-pack deal or something similar. If it's the same price as the retail copy, I'll go with that one.
Ivalset
