They aren't good games as fans may have you believe. The games are pretty much copy pasted focussing on making them artificially difficult concentrating on memorising patterns rather than responsive gameplay. I always hold Ikaruga as a far superior shmup/bullet-hell and in terms of games produced by a single person fails to compare the pixel's Cave Story. I really only think it's popularity exist due to tonnes of cute pictures, hentai doujins and obnoxious music. The fans I have met in life have been some of the most annoying people I have met and I am skeptical of the characters' personalities being authentic and official instead of being some fan produced interpretation.

Thats how I feel about it too. The first few Touhou games I played were definately interesting but it became really boring because of the reason you mentioned.
The reason I got to know about a bunch of the characters is through Doujins and other fanmade stuff, I really didn't care much in the game.
I like the majority of the music covers so I can't complain
