I mentioned this in bug reports, but peppy wants more opinions on this matter.

Do you think there should be separate highscore charts for players using a mouse and players using some sort of touchscreen (such as TabletPC)?

I think there should be, because people using touchscreen have an unfair advantage.

No. It needlessly segregates the scores and creates two (or more) different games. Plus, is it going to be possible to verify what someone is using? There are many different types of pointing devices: TabletPC, drawing tablet, regular mouse, trackball, laptob nub, laptop touchpad, and Wii remote. (I have 3 of those, plus one I didn't mention, and am looking to add 2 others of the ones I mentioned soon when I buy a new computer.) Are you going to have separate charts for each of them?

How about instead, we just push for beatmap creators to make separate beatmap files; easy, normal, and hard for mouse-users, and a stylus difficulty level, where you get many things that only stylus users could do (such as lots of quarter note beats in a row, beats across the screen, stuff like that). Really, if the beatmap is made correctly, there shouldn't be too much trouble between stylus users and mouse users, unless they intentionally made it difficult for mouse users by taking advantage of it's limitations.

I'm sure there will be a much larger beatmap style segregation once somebody comes out with a working DS beatmap client.

Has anyone tried playing Osu! with a trackball? What's it like?

Horrible and basically impossible. Playing Osu! (for me) is constant mouse motion, so my instinct is to not lift my thumb off the trackball in order to keep moving it. That's counterintuitive and doesn't work on a trackball, though, as the way to use one is to keep lifting your finger off it to grip the "middle" of the ball or to rest your finger off it.

I'm not up to the level of timing + accuracy that Osu! demands, also, but I've only had the trackball for a month (and I use a mouse at work). The level I'm at is perfectly fine for OS usage (and not that different from a regular mouse in OS usage), but not for gaming.

I don't think it's necesary. All the beatmaps here are "optimized" for mouse play. And some of them can be even harder with a touchscreen (the ones you need to click after 1/4 or 1/8 beat). Also, if we encourage people to do 2 versions for each song, the number of beatmaps will decrease. It's like saying that every beatmap needs 3 or 4 difficulty levels.
