I've seen quite a few pictures of anime girls sitting like so:

It LOOKS doable, but I just can't do it at all.
Is it just me or is it normal to be unable to sit like that?

I can doable on position 1.

2 & 3 is really impossible for me.

The first picture's pretty much doable for almost everyone

Second and third are for masochists who wants to endure that pain to put their legs at that angle

a friend of mine fell once when skiing (well, skiing practice) and ended up in the third position, he couldnt walk for a week or so.

Ah. That there is W sitting (yes that's what its actually called). While I can do it I've heard its not very good to sit like that because it apparently can disrupt the blood flow to your legs. Or at least that's what my parents told me.
