[Rule] Mapsets must retain original song (mp3 swapping)

This has been a word-of-mouth rule in the past within the community. We don't take our own older maps and re-submit them as something new. This is to keep consistency with sets and to avoid things like KD abuse on sets.

My proposed addition to the rules would be...

When submitting a map, you will not change the song under any circumstances. The only acceptable usage of swapping MP3's would be to improve the quality of the current MP3 on the set and/or to change versions (full/TV/short version) of songs.

Discussion closes in a week.

Pretty fair.

If for this - yeah, pretty fair.

fair enough

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Also, if you swap the mp3 or video after uploading a map the first time, and then you update the beatmap, does either one even get replaced on the osu servers?

We've also done short/long version changes of the same song and found that to be acceptable. Kind of falls under your wording until you say "only quality change is acceptable." Might want to throw that provision in.

Answer to your first question; in the past people have had maps sitting around in their pending slots or graveyard, and instead of submitting a brand new map for a new song, they just switch the mp3s and map it new again. People do this to avoid taking up more pending slots, have the submit date look older than it actually is (which I find kind of funny lol) and if the map already has kd thrown at it, then they will already be starting off with +x! Its sort of been an unspoken rule for awhile, but after Ephemeral addressed it I think it was mostly cleared up.

Second question: of course! Both are replaced if you change them.

As for the purposed rule, I agree wholeheartedly on it. When people do things like that it really defeats the purpose of the whole pending slot system and the graveyard. Why have the slots if you can just re-purpose already submitted maps?

Any map that does this should be nuked.

wouldn't that just help the mapper tho? i mean the only reason i can see someone doing this is to A. get rid of a song/map or B. they don't have enough pending slots lol

edit: I assumed that a nuked map meant it would be the same as graved but i think im wrong lol
BeatofIke
I regret posting this way back in 2011.
Then again...maps could not be deleted when it is graveyard back then >.<

Anyways, rule seems fair enough I guess!

how about changing to short version or a full one ?

I've asked about this already, supposedly it's alright providing it's the same version of the song (I.E. not a remix) just extended/shortened.

I don't understand. What if I just submitted a map, then instantly regret with its poor quality, and don't have any spare slot left? This rule is virtuous in its intention, but a more flexible rule can do this too. For example:

Rule:
Maps must be ranked after 7 days of its submission. If its mp3 file was changed for reason except for improving its quality, then it must be ranked 7 days after its mp3 file is changed.
For the kd abuse, I can't deny it's a problem. But mostly the mapper just wants to change a song they don't want to map any more to a map they urge to upload.
What if we ask for a feature request that mappers can delete their pending beatmaps? If so, I can accept this rule without any doubt.

Actual restrictions are fine, if a mapper has the urge to upload a song, they should plan how they submit their beatmaps.

Wait till it's graved.

This marks the end of discussion.

Okay... I'm fine with it. Just a pity that I can't wipe my old shitty maps and pretend my new song was actually submitted 3 years ago x.x

Well, so if a mapper wanted to add more power to a song because the said song is so awesome and they love it, they can't..?
I mean using audacity or anything to add more decibels until the song starts to be jamming and horribly impossible to hear..

The mapper can add more decibels to the mp3 file. This rule states that swapping mp3 isn't acceptable for reasons like, the song's map have kudosus, and change the song so that the new song's map have these kudosu.
