Hello so I alternate on every beat, my friend was telling me earlier that I'm only supposed to be using one key for the most part but alternate when there is a stream of notes appearing on my screen. Which way is correct?

There's no right way to play Osu. Just pick whichever one's comfortable for you

Also tell your friend that he's an idiot for saying that you're only supposed to alternate during stacks/streams.

People alternate during stacks/streams because it's hard for them to press one key instead of two in rapid succession

Like frostei said, just do whatever floats your boat

If alternating all the time comes naturally, by all means do it. It'll come in handy when you start playing maps above 200bpm.

Your friend is wrong. It doesn't matter whether it's streams, stacks, or just 3 hit circles that are just spread out .

What is right, is what feels comfortable to you when you alternate .

Test out your alternating on various songs in many different ways, sometimes when you get use to alternating, you might alternate without hesitation and thus, alternating becomes natural to you .

The thing is that alternating is a more difficult style since it´s harder to control the beat and the rhytm by alternating when you have single circles. Alternating will seem faster at first but probably your accuracy will suck, That is if you alternate 100%. Yes you´re friend is wrong, but i would reccomend you learned single tapping because it´s easier. I myself started alternating at first and then switched, don´t worry about not being able to go fast enough, single tapping can go very fast.

Its true, although there is no right way to play osu, there are general ways in which MOST people can learn how to play faster. I know EVERY osu! player want´s to improve fast so i warn you alternating correctly is not an easy path, still everyone is different and pick the style you enjoy the most.
