1/8th snap interval

I was messing around with making a song today when I kept finding that without 1/8th snap internal, I could not get the beats I needed. So I decided to follow the handy advice of the editor and consult someone on the forum - as I certainly am not a 'very experienced beatmapper' ^^;

I have attached the beatmap. (only mapped literally 10 seconds, but I don't see how to time those beats without 1/8th snap) - is what I have done alright? is there a better way to do it?

If you think you need to use 1/8 snap, most of the time is just the timing at fault. Here:

  1. BPM: 150.25
  2. Offset: 230
This should work good enough. Don't worry, you'll gain experience with Timing if you keep practicing. ;)
Also, next time upload the map using the BSS (beatmap submission system) to Help/WiP, and there should be no problems then.
Good luck! :)

I'll try helping then. First and most importantly:

[Timing]
BPM 150.25
Offset 230

After fixing your timing, re-snap your beats using a snap divisor of 1/4; there's no need to use 1/8 with the beats you have.

Thanks for that. I was so sure I had the offset right. ;_;

I'll try using 1/4 beats, see what comes out... :?
EDIT: This is so confusey, but it seems to work much better now! Thanks!

Here's something to take into account in the future when mapping a song and trying to decide on 1/4 or 1/8.

Generally, most mappers find that if something requires 1/8, they will just double the BPM so they can use 1/4. However, this is very much a situational thing. A song like this, which sounds slow, should opt for a slower BPM. A map like this, however, should have doubled the BPM that is currently in the map (it should be 176 instead of 88). The map's BPM is half of the actual BPM due to the pace of the song feeling faster.

Basically, to find the correct BPM without some music theory knowledge:
If the song feels slow, opt for the slower BPM. If the song's pace is faster, opt for the faster BPM.

Why does this matter for 1/4 and 1/8? Generally, the slower map will not use 1/8. Typically, the song is at a faster rate than the BPM you have set. In this case, you double the BPM and map those 1/8 notes as 1/4. However, if the song feels slow, generally the notes will be 1/8 if they line up.

(sorry for the shitty post, I'll try to fix it when not so tired)

That's really overcomplicating things, Mogsworth. Call me a fool, but intuition has worked well enough for determining the "correct" BPM for me in the past.

I was basically overcomplicating what we define as intuition. Keep in mind that not everyone has the same background as us; we are capable of detecting if something is a sixteenth note or a thirty-second note etc. just by listening to it, and thus we have a refined sense. Also keep in mind that I'm editing that post to make it less convoluted at a point where I am not operating on no sleep for 3 days.
