[resolved] [osu!lazer] Questions about updating beatmaps and local scores

I downloaded and played many beatmaps offline before making an account. osu! updated their online info, making the "Update" button appear on some maps. I'm afraid of losing my local scores, so I have some questions.

1. If I play the map online, will it force an update if I don't click the button? Will it submit scores if I don't update it? If I accidentally click "Update", will I be able to cancel the operation? Clicking "Update" only updates the corresponding beatmap and not all maps at once, correct?

2. If I click the update button, then I assume I will lose all my local scores on maps that have had changes. Is there a way to check whether I will lose scores? Does it tell you this when you click the button?

3. Is there a way to keep the outdated beatmap and scores and import the updated beatmap at the same time? If I download the updated map and import it, does that overwrite the outdated map, or does it appear as a separate map? If I export the outdated map and re-import it after clicking "Update", will it work, and will my local scores show up?

Does anyone want to help me test this with their own map? I also don't know if it's different for unranked vs. ranked maps.

I'm playing on lazer. Specifically, I'm on the outdated version 2025.607.0-lazer with the old song select that I prefer, which strangely still allows me to submit scores.

It won't force an update but you have to update the beatmap to be able to submit an online score, and when you update the beatmap it might remove the local scores. Clicking "Update" only updates the corresponding beatmap.

No, it won't tell you but it's pretty certain that you will lose your scores

You can't have the updated and outdated beatmap at the same time, same with the scores done with both versions

Just a note that in the future submission for this version might not be possible anymore

Thank you for the information. You can't have both at the same time, but if you export a copy of the old beatmap and re-import it later, does that let you see your old scores? Or do exports have slight differences that might prevent that?

I'll keep the outdated beatmaps unless I'm interested in submitting scores.

It seems that I can import an offline copy of a map by removing the online information from the .osu files and changing the .osu file names (imports being dependent on file names explains the metadata conflicts I've heard of regarding difficulty names). Maybe I'll do that when importing work in progress maps or unranked maps that look rankable.

The game doesn't actually delete the replays when you update a beatmap, although to a degree in this scenario it's a very vacuous distinction as there's next to no chance to access the replays even if you try to circumvent the beatmap update machinery.

You can do that but you won't get your scores back post-facto. This is because scores are matched to a beatmap by the .osu file's hash. Changing the .osu changes the hash and therefore breaks the connection of the replays in question to the beatmap.

I understand. I meant it for new maps I haven't played that are likely to update in the future.

Based on what you said, I assume you can view the replays as long as you have exact copies of the .osu files, which can be obtained through exporting the map or editing externally.

To update the map and submit scores, you can obtain copies of the ranked or updated .osu files and replace the original ones through editing externally (this is better than clicking "Update" or importing the .osz because it preserves the date added). To view the original scores, you replace those with the original .osu files again.

I tried it on a locally edited copy of a ranked map I barely played, and it worked as expected. Then I tried it on a map with an "Update" button (specifically, the ranked Dziekuje map), and it also worked. I could submit a score on the ranked copy and edit the .osu files back to see my older replays. I also just learned it actually tells you if the map doesn't match the online version when you start playing it.

I like that replays are stored forever, even though it's not communicated to the player. I once attempted to change the background of a map through the editor, and that deleted my scores. I only found out through a GitHub discussion that they weren't actually deleted, and I could re-import the map to restore them. I ended up making a copy of the map to play with a different background because I didn't understand editing externally at the time.
