So what happened was, I had an unranked(and deleted) map with local scores on it. I exported the beatmap, then in the edit song selector I found that it was letting me "update" the map, even though the beatmap wasn't listed on osu! anymore. So out of curiosity, I copied the beatmap file, and tried the "update".

Bad choice... this "update" literally deleted the beatmap (empty beatmap file). Thankfully I had a backup copy right? Well, replacing the empty beatmap with the backup didn't bring my replays back. I've also tried manually clicking on every replay I had to try to get local replays back, but it stayed empty.

So, does local scores get deleted when a map updates? Or did the hash somehow change in a way that my replays no longer recognized the map?

Yes, local replays got deleted when the map updates, even importing old replays back will only resulting in failure.

This is intentional, it's to prevent nonsense miss causing by object changing in the map (the map stores object position, while the replay stores cursor coordination). Map got unloved, disqualified, or ranked also have to delete all replays as well partly because of this.

But what if I had a replay for a map saved elsewhere. If I update the map, then revert to an older version of the map (by copy-pasting old map back), the replays that are saved in /data/r will be deleted during the update correct? But will the replay I saved elsewhere be able to be imported to the reverted version of the map?

Edit: nvm, apparently the replays I was trying to recover are still there, but the map that I copied was corrupted. I managed to snag an older correct copy online and got my old replays back.
