The metronome on the osu! beat map editor is terrible, and it speeds up beats and gets completely off from the beat of the song after about 10 seconds (I tested this by keeping the beat better myself). I have no idea what's going on or if I should even be using the osu! client to make beatmaps?

Set the BPM to a number where the metronome doesn't get off from the beat.

speed up the song in audacity until it matches the metronome
I'm still new to beatmapping
but I can give you these advice
- If your acc below 95% (total sum of all, not only at your profile) you may set the BPM until it get's to "BPM sensitivity : 1"
- If it below that, then just set tapping (or click it) until some set of beat, then change the number a little bit
Of course, not every map that actually have only one BPM, like Roze ( http://osu.ppy.sh/s/65994 )
If your map acctually gat the same case as this one (not as much that one, hopely), then you maybe need some help
Btw, I'll provide you with some link in youtube for setting BPM.
