Is FCing crucial for improving?

I used to farm PP maps three years ago, but since then, I've only been playing on and off, mostly as a warm-up. These days, I focus on pushing for passes on harder maps, like Cycle Hit and Everything Will Freeze. I've also been improving my scores on maps I could barely pass before, like The Big Black.

I play a lot of DT maps too, aiming to pass 6.5* maps because I enjoy the fast pacing. Honestly, I feel like I've improved—passing maps I once thought were impossible and it feels great.

That said, I haven’t FCed or even tried to FC anything in the last three years. Do you think this approach is holding me back? Should I start grinding for FCs to improve further? I don’t care about rank, but if FCing would make me a better player overall, I’m willing to put in the effort.

Yes, you can

It's the most reliable measure of your consistency. You are testing everything you got with your aiming, tapping, and reading, with also how you managing the preassure for doing so. If pushing your star limit is saying "what can I achieve?", FC is saying "how can I perfect everything?". Regular FC will guarantee your robustness of your skill, having less of a 'bad day', and having better preassure management makes your whole play much better.

Lower your FC range a bit from your usual play-only-for-pass range, even more so with tech, stream, lower AR, Modded play, etc. That way, you know for sure your baseline for consistency. I'd personally not trying too much, perhaps not more than 15 attempts/day.

Your skillcap won't be hindered at all like this, provided you don't build truly bad habits like mashing and misreading (which shouldn't be a problem if you're going for like A-rank's on maps that are too hard to FC, but will be if you just mash through 7*s with 72% all day). Of course, the best way to improve at FCing maps is to FC maps, but if you aren't interested who cares.
