abraker rates rollercoasters (part II)

As you may have noticed, my prev thread had part 1 from the day I made it. In time for the Halloween festivities, I had already made plans at that time to visit Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ. Some have also noticed that the ratings were a tad harsh as well.

#1 Medusa



I had the pleasure of riding this 3 times in a row since there is barely anyone when the park first opens up. It's a fun ride the first time. It not a coaster you'd go for gravity drops and such, but for the twists and twirls. Unlike the rides I experience later, it's rather smooth. Either due to poor breakfast or otherwise I started getting more nauseous the following couple times, so you know it puts you through a loop or many.

#2 Runaway Minetrain



A cute little ride that has no substance. You could also smell that train smell in from seet, or maybe that was my imagination. At least it was longer than SuperDooperLooper at Heresy Park. Great ride for kids, not so much for thrills.

#3 El Toro



Now this is a really well known wooden coaster, and my friend compared this to Lightning Racer at Hershey Park. The comparison was fair but it's also built different. Followed by the decent initial drop notice in the pic how many hills the thing has. No doubt you will feel the forces trying to fling you out of the kart throughout the ride as you go through each of those bumps. In the front seat it didn't feel rattly as I thought it would be, which is a pleasant surprise.

#4 Skull Mountain



I wish I could provide a picture of the coaster itself, but alas it is an inside coaster. It is also the first roller coaster I have ever been on, around 15 years back. I didn't remember what it was like, but I do remember it wasn't thrilling as the ones I've been since. And thrilling it's not. The only remotely "thrilling" part is the initial drop, which is something best experienced sitting at the very back. After that initial drop you get to experience the equivalent of Runaway Minecart in darkness.

#5 Houdini's Great Escape



Yet another indoor ride, and a very unique one at that. It's a so-called illusion coaster and is best experienced going in blind. Because of this I won't spoil what the ride does here. What I will say is that it's not a thrill coaster, but it's very interesting going in first time and maybe second time to see how it works, but loses its magic after more.

#6 The DARK KNIGHT Coaster



And this will be the last indoor ride before going onward to actual thrill rides. Best to avoid this one unless you just want to say you did it. To give an idea of what this ride is like, imagine a dark carnival minecart where you going through various "spooky" gotham themed things on the walls. To put a cherry on top, the rail zig-zags across with 180 degree turns like this



which make for quite brutal turns. Brutal as in jerky.

#7 Batman: The Ride



This ride is similar to the Great Bear at Hershey Park. Just like the other ride, your feet hang off the ground. Unlike that the other ride, this is really twisty and twirly. It is also rather short. Maybe I was not particularly feeling it for the twist and twirls due to the earlier induced nausea from the Medusa ride, but I had a better experience on Great Bear. If you do like those kind of things, go ahead an another point to the rating for yourself.

#8 Jersey Devil Coaster



I had the pleasure of going on this ride a couple times, once in front and once in middle. Not like you will have a choice in that anyway. So this ride is pretty unique from the beginning. The carts move people get off and get on, and there is only one seat per cart. Unless you are literally first in the batch of people getting on, the seat you get is basically rng. It's not the tallest coaster, but it does give a decent view, and is of repectible length too. There is a section where it goes deeper into the forested area making for a pretty nice night time ride. It has twists and turns, but not as much as Medusa or the Batman Ride.

#9 Wonder Woman: Lasso of Truth



Not a rollercoaster but quite a swing! The way this works it slowly spins you as it swings you back and forth, at a slightly more than 180 deg angle. Standing right below it it looks quite intimidating scary as it swings right past above you. You can feel the sudden woosh of air from it as it passes by. Getting on was also quite interesting. No loose shoes allowed everything out of pockets, etc etc. So I was under the impression this packs quite the force. While it didn't do quite that, it did give an experience unlike any other ride I've been on before. You don't really feel any spin and it's just there to give you a good view from all angles. Altogether feels like a really huge swing set. There are 2 things you will remember walking away from this: how the gust of air rushes by you and the view from the top looking down below as it starts swinging down.

#10 Nitro



I also had the pleasure riding this one twice. It's quite similar to Skyrush in Hershey Park. Perhaps a bit longer, which makes it as enjoyable as Wildcat's Revenge. It also reaches a max speed of 80 mph, which is slightly more than than Skyrush. It has twist and twirls, but I don't find them obnoxious. Overall a solid coaster.

#11 Kingda Ka



To give you an idea on what this monster is: it's a pneumatic powered hypercoaster, the fastest and tallest operating ride in the world. It accelerates you from 0 to 128 mph in 3.5 seconds, subjecting you to 5G forces. You bet I was excited to try this one out. Standing in line you could see some people come out with eyes teared. One particular lady was nervous the entire crowd peer pressured her into doing it.

So I sat in and the carts moved forward and stopped. I set there for a good few seconds as the pneumatics ramped up- and then... oh how violently it propelled me forward. At that speed it feels like a crackling wooden coaster trying to grapple to the rails as much as it could. The air is rushing so fast my hoodie's hood had no chance of staying on. Say goodbye to any hat you might be wearing. Before I know it I was already going down in a spiral and across the one hill the ride has, still rackity, still violently. And then a forced stop. It's a pretty short ride but a hell of an experience.

I went on this thing a total of 4 times: twice in front, once in middle, and once in back. I do not recommend anywhere but the front. Other spots are just too jittery for my liking, and you don't really notice the difference in the drop between front and back at those speeds. Going on the ride 4 times made up plenty for how short the ride is, but it's still the one and only flaw. Yea, I'm harsh critic. Here's hoping the legendary 10/10 rating will go to some hypercoaster of the future that does justice by outdoing Kingda Ka in length.

#12 The Joker



This ride is pretty weird. On first impression it looks like the carts are able to swing freely as they go through what looks like a maze of a path. The ride is also short- very short. Actually riding on it you are met with greater disappointment as you realize the swinging is forced by sudden flipping of the carts a few times. You can feel the unnatural jerk as the cart is forced to flip. And before you know it you are waiting to get off the ride at least 3x longer than the ride itself.
