I play osu on mobile (tablet), and mainly like to play 1.5 minute maps, for context. Assume from this point on, I am talking about 1.5 minutes maps unless stated otherwise. Most 2.4 stars are pretty reasonable to S for me. 2.5 stars too. Some 2.6 stars are a bit tricky, but by and large they're pretty much fine if I focus and try up to 3 times. 2.7 star maps are a bit of a jump, being a tad on the faster side but still doable to S after some watching some full auto play replays, listening to the beat, and playing quite a lot more than 3 times. From 2.8, not so much.
This is THE spike. And I think part of that might be because, technically, these ARE 3 stars. Barebones, 3.0 stars, but still. The non-optional touch device mod, because I play on tablet (not drawing tablet, I just play on a tablet with my fingers), lowers the effective star rating of beatmaps. The lowest 3 stars seem to drop to around 2.8 stars.
Not a problem. The question is, should I focus more on a variety of 2.5-2.6 stars to build up to 2.8 without the extra strain presented by 2.7 stars, or should I go lower and play longer but easier maps like 3+ minute 2.3/2.4 stars to build stamina first? Should I do something more absurd like try to S a 6 minute long 2 star map or two? Or, maybe, try to master this one jump map that seems surprisingly doable and see if that helps me to adjust to these 2.8-star-pseudo-3-star-speeds? (The jump map is: Corner Jump training mapped by QuadroKiller, the second difficulty "Honda Mariko, Tanaka Rie - Mousou Katharsis AR 8," 3.73 stars no touch mod, 3.25 stars touch mod (but feels easier than that after enough replays)) Or should I just bite the bullet, forego 95% accuracy for a while, and ram headfirst into 2.8 and 2.9 star maps?
Obviously "play more" is the key to making this jump, as with osu progression in general, right? My question, then, boils down to: "Play more of what maps?"
Hope this was intelligible. Sorry if it wasn't.
