This is a shot in the dark, but I believe a white theme will be great for the website.

The first and main reason I have for this proposal stems from a personal issue. I have trouble reading text on dark themes due to my astigmatism. Reading text on dark themes makes my eyes get tired more quickly and I also get an a halation like effect around the text, leaving a outline afterimage of it. A white theme works better for me and I believe it will work better for others with my condition and others like it.

The second reason is simply that some people prefer white themes over dark themes. I'm sure there are some people that would prefer a white version of the website, alongside a dark one.

i'd also like the concept of white and dark mode, using the main color "pink" as a touch instead

Oh yeah. White and pink will go really well, I think.

@flyte: Any suggestions on a potential light color scheme?

I don't see this being very practical because the darker color scheme is so built in to the website's design -- there are assumptions about contrast with (generally) lighter images, most shadows assume a dark bg, many assets have the dark theme baked in, list goes on. it's at least not simple and would require a full review of pretty much every page. in the meantime I think there are browser extensions to simulate light or dark themes for websites that don't provide them

also flyte doesnt read this

This showed up a few times on github:

  1. https://github.com/ppy/osu-web/issues/4652
  2. https://github.com/ppy/osu-web/issues/4670
  3. https://github.com/ppy/osu-web/issues/8072
but yeah as above, we're going to need actual designer input for this.
