What programs you think are the most essential to your everyday computer life.
Preferably not games (WoW, osu!, etc).

It can be top3 or top5 or as many as you need, but try not listing your entire application list.
Pretty much stuff that you install as soon as you get your new computer and that you use almost everyday.

For me it would be

Winrar
Irfanviewer
Notepad++
Launchy
Firefox
Wizard Of Orz

If you really think about it, slowly web is taking over programs.
You can now login into any messenger through sites. Edit images (picnik, aviary, sumopaint, etc) and even videos. You can convert files, work in word/powerpoint. Even games are slowly moving to web with QuakeLive or taking it even further, we can start talking about OnLive and other game streaming systems (even though I call bs on the latencies).
You're just now realizing this?

You're at least five years behind.

OnLive is still in beta :|
ChromeOS isn't out yet.
There's still long way to go.

I don't use MS Office, I work on and save my personal documents on google docs, can work on it from work, home and college without the need of updating each copy with a usb flash disk or emails.

I don't know what you're talking about. Someone wrote the code for Subterranean Animism and compiled it. Sounds like a program to me.

Visual Studio (AWESOME)
Live Messenger (can't help that everyone uses it)

Those are probably my most-used programs.

- Google Chrome
- Thunderbird
- Pidgin
- Songbird

- 7-Zip
- Media Player Classic

I don't think so. At least not in Poland. Here everyone uses this:

I love how this thread is going exactly where i tried making it not go but knew it would end up like.
People just listing a list of programs they have installed now...

I doubt Crysis or Nero ESSENTIAL to your everyday computing life. Nor is having 3 different browsers.
nardii
While slightly off-topic, I think this would be a good place to ask something I've always wondered: Why do people seem to like Winamp so much? The interface and features aren't anything special and to me it gives off that "bloated commercial app" kind of vibe. I think I'd even rather use Windows Media Player (seriously).
Neo@lex
Polygon Love 2
µTorrent
mIRC
Ventrilo
Rainmeter

Firefox obviously goes without saying. Anyone who says they don't use it is lying.

Winamp has much better compatibility and more features. It's also less buggy.
Foobar2000's similar, although it's more stable but also more limited.

My must have programs

1. Firefox
2. Skype
3. Netbeans
4. uTorrent
5. osu!
6. Steam
7. WinRAR
8. Ventrilo

I think that's about it

Apparently I don't know anything and I love it.
Pasonia
As an end user I don't care HOW it works but whether using it makes me happy.

I know using FF makes me much happier than using IE, so that's +1.

Other programs I think we all should have (and know) are Audacity and Photoshop.

Instead of bashing on FF, pull out some actual arguments.

-2 for you. WMP is shit. Even more bloated and slow than Winamp.

Well personally, the Winamp I used was nothing like this. Old versions were quite dece and very straigh forward.
Now I'm more into foobar2k because it's way more customizable, but I do admit that it's quite much more work to get it really like I want it to be. I would never recommand it to an average user.

I'd never use WMP/Winamp, I'd rather die.

No, I just continued what others started.

Well, I'm going to re-post my list. (yes)
- Google Chrome (Amazing web browser, faster and lighter than Firefox)
- Thunderbird (Mail client)
- Pidgin (IM)
- Songbird (Audio player)
- GIMP (Everyone knows)
- 7-Zip (Archiver, better than WinRAR. And yet, it's free.)
- Media Player Classic (...)

Firefox is a semi memory hog for people whose computer is still in the stone age.(me)

It is also prone to memory leaks.

Still more tolerable than IE.

Not really :\
My main goal was to find more useful apps that could actually be nice to have, which is why I was trying to avoid browsers or obvious programs everyone have.

Meh firefox without addons runs pretty low, but I guess if you want even lower, you'd have to go with Chrome, which runs really fast and smooth.

My task manager says otherwise.

Chrome has a single tab open (Wave). Opera has ... 28 tabs open right now (I cleaned recently), many with Flash shit and shit.

Still much less memory usage than Firefox. As far as I remember, Opera had some problems with CSS3 lately...

I would use chrome over FF, but there few add-ons I got used to, chrome have adblock now, I just need autopager.

I use jetAudio, mainly because of the minimalistic full screen hud and the toolbar mode. WMP classic looks awful and the new WMP controls suck, no space bar pause/play, right/left rewind forward. I used to use the core media player but it is not supported/updated anymore, I think the picture looks better in it and the new WMP. winamp does not support all formats (mkv/ogm). VLC is ugly and delays when pause/play, rewinding and forwarding also breaks the picture. I love Totem for linux, too bad there is no windows equivalent.

What about foobar2k?
Default looks pretty... minimal to me, not very slick but :P

I'd use foobar2k if equalizer wouldn't rape my CPU that much and if it'd support Last.fm radio...

I don't know why, but I always was under the impression that foobar was for audio files, if it can play my anime/tv series episodes I would use it. gonna try it again today.
Foobar and Winamp are for music.
VLC and MPC are for videos.
For anime, the best choice is MPC with CCCP and CoreAVC. It'll play pretty much anything without much system strain.

Yes, MPC would be best for animes.
And yes, winamp and foobar are for music, even though winamp plays videos too, but personally I think it does a shitty job at it. Not sure how the equalise rapes your CPU, I don't really notice it with my quadcores.

Also, I just remember another program that I use everything and that is extremly useful
QuickShot from imageshack tools.
It takes, saves and uploads a screenshot. Gives you the link in your clipboards. Extremly fast and easy way to show people stuff.

1. My method takes zero clicks, i take screenshot, 5second later, paste link
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/3995 ... 145333.png

2. It takes one click right now, not sure what you are talking about.
Go try it, you choose file(s) and press upload and there you have your DIRECT link in a BIG yellow bar.
You probably havn't used it in a long time, it has been getting quite much better.

3. I beleive you are talking about other sites, but imageshack does not alter the image.

Also, please provide better solutions. And personally, no offence to peppy, but I beleive up.ppy.sh wouldnt be considered as an alternative for many reasons. Might be a cool thing to maybe use in this forum by this community, but I wouldn't use it as my image hosting site. Rigth now in my imageshack profile, I have around 4000 images, which I doubt peppy would let me host (forever).

I'm still open to any other solution.
Well actually, exept for this program that is BUILT to work with imageshack, I usually use imgur for most my nonrelated hosting since the link is very short and simple.

On the whole browser memory usage thing:

I think Vista and 7 include caching and a whole lot of shit like that in the memory usage count for programs. XP doesn't have (as much?) caching so RAM usage is a lot less (but disk I/O is generally slower).
