I've been playing this game for a while now and I feel pretty confortable playing with mouse, but everywhere I look people say that tablet is better. How do I know I won't just waste money buying one? Is it really better than mouse or is just a preference thing? Thanks in advance, sorry if this is overasked.

A lot of it other than hardware is going to be preference. Even hardware to some degree is preference since there are other factors like financial status, comfortability, etc.
Try looking at reviews online and judge it for yourself.

Most people prefer tablet to mouse.
A few people prefer mouse to tablet.
As such if you really care about improving and being as good as possible, then I would invest in a tablet. But just be warned that there is a small but real chance you will end up not using the tablet anyways.

Again, agree with Naiad. In my opinion, the sole reason why we should move to tablet is because there is a problem with a mouse which I forgot the name. Basically the longer the beatmap with no breaks, the more you tilt your mouse. Tablet don't have that problem. That might be why mouse players use higher sens.
As someone who prefers mouse over tablet just use whatever you find more comfortable.
