Recently, I've been watching a lot of osu! videos on Youtube, most of which are self-explanatory videos to help you improve at the game. I came across videos of some top osu! players talking about reading and how to get better at it, and I heard they were talking about increasing the gamma. They said that objects will seem more visible when they appear, which is a good thing if you are playing a high AR map, so I tried by myself to see if it's that good.

My reading has never been so perfect since I started using gamma. It's now easier for me to play with any difficulty increase mods, because before that, I couldn't stop missreading due to my poor vision, or due to the screen darkness. The only negative point is when I use gamma for too long, my head starts to hurt and I have no choice but to go back to 1.00. It happened to me a few times, but it's not a big deal so I'm good.

Now I am asking to the community : Do you also use gamma to achieve better scores?

Yes, I use gamma for whenever I play high AR. I even raise or lower gamma depending on if I'm reading too slow or too late on a certain day.

I have gamma bottomed out to the zero point in windows settings because colors look really washed out on my monitor otherwise.

The one time I tried raising the gamma to play a map with AR above my comfort range it did not seem to confer any kind of benefit.

I am hugely reliant to play both high ar and low ar, and I'm quite proficient at both.

the circles and cursor both look really weird with gamma and i have no issue with constistently reading up to 9.3 maybe 9.4 (dt) ar on a good day which is good enough for the maps i play

Gamma still is to this day one of the most controversial things, a lot of people think it is placebo, a lot think its not, we all know the drill...

I have been using it to play either high ar (mainly dt) or low ar (ar8>). 1.5 and 0.5 on the nvidia control panel respectively.

The topic has been pretty quiet (or so i think) but i noticed btmc changing his gamma, and even talking about it on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvBN2W5XC8s&ab_channel=BTMC
He just goes and plays a tournament and uses gamma to achieve better scores, something pretty basic. This made me wonder how many top players actually use gamma, and that will probably be a big chunk of them, since the effect on the game while using gamma is exponential, in the way that the difference using gamma on ar9 is barely noticeable, but on ar11 it will be a lot more playable, same goes with lower ar's with lower gammas, its way more noticeable the lower ar you go.

The only real downsides is that you may sacrifice the visuals, but if you want to get to the top ranks, or have top scores, who cares? (theres no videogame people don't lower their visuals in to get a competitive advantage)

In my personal experience, im barely able to read ar9 dt on a good day, but with gamma i can read up to 9,2ar dt pretty comfortably anytime, and im not the best low ar player, but my score pretty much doubles from original when using gamma too, so i can say that it works pretty flawlessly

I am pretty sure a lot of top players use gamma to achieve better scores nowadays, because it just makes high/low AR way easier to read than if you use the default settings. It's unfortunate that I rarely hear discussions on this subject compared to before, because in the past, people were seriously wondering whether using gamma was cheating or not. I would now like to know whether using gamma is one of the most essential things for improvement or not.

I don't think it's anywhere near essential, but it does help.

Imo those type of “advantages” are good only if you learned to play without them before, like with the rapid trigger for example.

Because I'm not a DT player (Just limited to farming), I don't
