Hello it took me some days to make up my mind for writing this thread.

I'm really disappointed in the way Osu! seems to go.
As you can see my name is 'Loli-tan' ingame.
Someone got the great idea(sarcasm) to filter this word out in multi game.
I get replaced by Fine lady-tan and it is really buggin me the last days.

First of all 'Loli' (ロリ) is nothing more then a short form of a type of girl.
It doesn't mean anything lewd, what you might think. Then there is a really nice function
in Osu!, the filtering of any cautious words. Maybe it could be considered to enable it by default, so
there should be no problem.

I see great complexes or pure hate against the term Loli by the moderator or developer, who ever implemented it and
I'm limited in my freedom of speech. I don't know what the reason was, should it be more family safe? - No it isn't any lil bit
safer than before.
I get disadvantages against other players! I can't use commands like !stats, there are player with "r*per", "beatmyk*dz" and few
harder usernames and they aren't restricted.

I'd like to hear your all opinion about this altercation and want honest feedback.
I've even found someone called ''kankerneger'' lol

those are some very strong words to describe an entire team of people.

Yeah i can point on facts written by some random guys too. Of course i read the article before i opened this topic.
What you showed me is the source of the word. Today's this word doesn't relate to sexual.
I address my sister as loli, people all over the world, who i know say it only to say its short girl or appearing like one.

Even in anime, i could tell you thousands, but i will only say one. In To Aru majutsu no index (ep around 10, first season). Touma addresses
Index as quote loli, say to me: does he intended to say that, he or the stuff or the tv sender are sexually aroused by her, while
airing that at family safe times?

You can't come with such spongy arguments or are you saying that in family safe series, they are intentional promoting sexual content containing Lolis?
Jarby
It's a multifaceted word with associations outside of pedophilia (fashion, kawaii culture etc) obviously, but the illicit meaning is far from removed.

who would associate it with the worst case?
I think they would be older than 18 in this case.

Even from the fashion culture of japan, you would associate it with the kawaii culture term and there are very much shows, who show this fashion, of course on prime time.
My problem is, that this word alone can't be judged as adult or cautious word. There are to factors who can make this word bad.
And for this fact, the most underage miss the information which would make it to the 'so bad word'.
Jarby
If you search for either loli or ロリ on google image, the first results are scantily clad or naked children in sexual poses, dakimakura etc. The predominate meaning is illict and I can understand why it would be blocked in osu!.
D33d
The novel 'Lolita' is very well documented as being about paedophilia and manipulation. Wikipedia itself has a knack for ironing out any misinformation in regards to popular topics, so its bigger articles are not written by "some random guys." I could very easily turn that sentiment onto you, calling you "some random guy" who's trying in vain to sugar-coat the word.

Believe me; "loli" is very evocative of sexualised, underaged girls.

oh by the context i got that you have a personal antipathy to Loli. You seem to focus to justify this all. There are player with the words "rape", "fuck" and other.
You're going to say, all of them are not as bad as Loli?
When I read Loli then i say, ah ok short girl. When i read rape, then i read something get raped.

And Loli doesn't mean "hey google me on google pictures". You act like the church, trying to avoid all bad words. When growing up, you will learn words,
which could be bad, but it the society, which clarifies them as bad or defines the meaning.

It is never written that you have to associate Loli with sexual meaning.
But you can't say fuck has a different meaning. When blocking that homonym, you are saying that this word will be interpreted by all kids as
bad word. It is like someone teaches you 'table' means 'sex', when you do it to a generation, you would have to ban the word table.
Oh hell i get tired of that discussion...

Yeah for you it is. I believe you, that you belive it is a so bad word. I asked my bro 10 minutes ago (he is 16 and not into japan stuff). I said: "What is Loli?". He didn't even know. He googled it and said hm dunno. In german wikipedia it said some indonesian district, but i think you meant the anime term. It said like young girls".
He didn't even found something adult...

Perhaps I am focusing on the term loli because that's what the thread is about? I don't think users should have any foul language in their usernames either, really; and if you're going to just make ad hominems and assume things about me and my beliefs from a couple of unrelated paragraphs, then I'll concede because you don't want a discussion, you just want to be right.

Of course i started the discussion with the objective of being right. I want a discussion which should show me which arguments the opposite has.
For me is Loli just a word. I liked to make a really moe account, so i did. Now the Osu staff decided to say Loli is a lewd word, lets block it.
So I get limited to their personal thoughts with that word. We aren't in some communistic world, where you can ban things like you want.

If you came here for nothing more than validation, then take your schtick elsewhere. Vent to a friend via PM or something.
benjanyan
I'd call anything that looks young, short and flat-chested a loli in anime; as do most people I talk to. I have no doubts where the word comes from but words evolve, especially on the internet. There's also no doubts about how sexualised anime can be and that lolis are no exception.

But yeah, applying that to a username is a bit much.

This is the greatest problem i have with this filter. They degrade you to a less worthy user, who can't even watch his stats...
Primula_old
I do feel there are a lot of immature filters which cause confusion (what the heck is umbrella), and also unnecessary filters like Loli.

And I'd agree with benjanyan. There's nothing wrong with the word itself, but the context of which it may be used in - In which case, there's the !report command.

The lengths you go to for self-deception are both admirable and pitiable. The word(s) lolita/lolicon/loli are sexual in today's world, have been for fucking ages and will remain so for the foreseeable future. It's fine, I doubt many people in the osu! community would bash you for being a 2D-lolicon and I'm sure many people in the community are as well. Having a delusional view of what lolicon entails is also fine albeit a bit creepy, it's just that you complain when everyone else is not delusional. Sperging about how the word in your personal hamsterball has a different definition than 'sexualised underaged girl' and then victimising everyone else for not agreeing with you and hiding the word in a Safe For Work-environment due to its true definition just makes you a cunt. Be happy you can advertise that you like children to begin with and stop embarrassing yourself.

I never said "heh, i like childs" or something like that.
You say when you think Lolis are cute, you are a pedo?
This is really insensitive of you and just non-sense.
Even I cant understand what you would mean with embarrasing. I see
no problem til now, i wouldn't deny being a lolicon, but you are thinking it's embarrassing.

There should be another unnecessary filter for the word "lewd", maybe to something like "safe", just to see someone else have this problem. :)

Different cultures/subcultures use words differently. When I see the word loli on osu!, I assume it's used in the Japanese (anime) way, which usually just means "small, cute girls". The tag loli being used in pictures like this or this in pixiv shows that it is actually used that way, at least in the group of people who are into animes.

Oh well, people also feel differently towards each words, so I'm not going to try forcing people to think that my way of using loli is correct, but respect our opinion towards lolis too.

I'm not really asking for removal of the filter, as I understand some people might take this word a bit too seriously, but fixing the issue with command thing would be nice.

I understand you don't mean it in that way, but not all people know about the use of "loli" in the way you mean it. To some, it may just be the use of it in sexual context. I apologize if this is a bad analogy, but it's like using the word crusade. To people it may be just a holy war, but to others it will remind them of the violent holy war that took place in the past.

I personally thought that the banwords took place as a way to be extremely safe so no trouble takes place (like angry parents seeing that word and stuff).

Yes, I understand that. I know that there are people who doesn't like this word because of its true, original meaning, which is why I'm not against the decision to filter this word like I stated in my post previous to that.

I just wanted people to know that there are alternative (or distorted? Not sure if they're the right word) meaning to the word loli commonly used in Japan, especially in the anime community. Most people on osu!, including me, use the word this way, and I just didn't like the way we were being treated :/. I mean, I never used that word to describe a real life 10 years old girls unless I was joking around. I just keep it to the anime drawings.

And !stats is a convenient way to quickly see how well the person might play on multiplayer. Though I never tested, I'm pretty sure /addfriend, /watch, and other chat commands doesn't work either.
Azure_Kite
Then the best solution would be to cancel out the filter for client-server commands.

That's it, really.

Shouldn't this be in off topic...
Piine
Nah it in the right place but I do question from Lewder statement.

Just for having the keyterm. "Loli" and protecting your rights over your username instantly makes you a pedobear......?

I know I'm not into that kind of stuff, but even I find filters ridiculous cause I'm pretty sure filtering every naughty word is going to help the new generation out.....Pfft. yeah right

I'm still trying to compute how can a game be considered SFW if it a game to begin with and cannot be applied to a certain work force.....and even so it breaks it badly seeing how we have NSFW beatmaps. I am still kinda wondering why doesn't peppy just put a filter in registering so people wouldn't have to deal with this...

I wait for the next crazy idea..

I thought you'd realise a hyperbole when you see one, the last statement was a joke.

They have warnings on the download page, you know very well what you're about to get into. A game should not inherently be considered NSFW just because it has an online community of people who touch themselves to pandas in sorrow. thelewa
That's just your avatar. I had pictures of horseporn in my userpage for like a month.

well obviously though this game is pg13 and the reason why a word like "loli" is censored is to discourage the conversations that usually follow such a word

I've seen countless cases where people in #osu would go on about how they want to fuck lolis and censoring the word loli prevents that or at least makes it look nice

it's the same logic as was with censoring the word "fag" and "gay". It's not because of the word itself, it's because of the conversations that it brings. In this case it was hate speeches. This is actually a thing that happened. When a thread was made about it, peppy changed all filter words to print out _ for a while.
Piine

Mochiron it is ridiculous
Primula_old
There's a report command for a reason.
Words of which may not always be vulgar in nature should not be filtered.

If we're speaking in a literal sense, the word 'loli' doesn't actually mean anything on its own, it just references 'Lolicon' / 'Lolita'.
But if it's not used in a context of which suits either of those references.. surely it doesn't intend to mean anything vulgar in nature and by popular definition from an anime community point of view, the word 'Loli' alone assumes a cute/child-like character.. it may not be correct usage, but neither is it correct to assume lolicon/lolita out of context.

Like this character from Non Non Biyori, some people may describe her as being a loli just because she's a child, but they don't literally mean she's a sexy young girl that they want to do lewd things with (and yeah.. 'lewd' should be filtered with your logic, Lewder)
tokaku
I don't like how there's confusion in the censoring. I don't have anything against it but it's annoying. But for something like !stats is pretty retarded imo
dkun
firetruck this thread, it's going in circles.

please contact a staff member or email accounts@ppy.sh if you believe something is wrong or you'd like to discuss terms with your username. (do the latter if it's for the censor)
