Newb-friendly C++ compiler?

Dev++ won't work on Windows 8.1 it seems so I need a different one for class. There are plenty out there so I'm scared of picking a bad one.

I was using Code::Blocks back in high school. Very simple to use and works just fine.

(edit: assuming you were talking about IDEs, not compilers)

clang maybe, it throws more detailed errors than gcc

Visual Studio 2012 or 2013 -> C++ develop environment -> C++ empty project -> no CLR support

ps: GCC is the best
