I have put in well over 1k hours into osu, a game that i really love. ive stuck to not retrying, stayed away from farm maps as much as possible (untill recently due to frustration), i play longer maps, and yet im still stuck in 6 digit, while literally everyone else i know here are flying right out of this rank. am i really as bad and a slow learner as it seems, or am i seriously missing something? what am i doing wrong?

Hey don't worry man! You're rank is still improving even tho you have more than 1k hours on the game. You're getting better and better so if you keep playing long maps and improving your skillsets (stamina, aim, fingercontrol, etc.), you'll be a pro!

However, I don't know if it's due to the fact that you don't play regularly, I'm not sure.

Playtime is one variable out of many, look at what else you’re doing differently to others. It’s not just about putting in as many hours as possible, you also should make sure the time you put in is of high quality by being focused, well rested, taking breaks, and having a specific goal in mind to work towards. There’s also enjoyment, but I’ll assume you like playing the game.

You have a lot of maps played and many A ranks, not retrying doesn’t mean not improving your scores. Farm maps are good for improving raw aim in my opinion since they have easy rhythms so you just have to focus on the position of notes.

Some of them get ranks very easily, because of the farm maps from what I've heard.

Even though some longer maps do give you more pp if you're consistent at it, most of the time the average osu! gamer would play a 1:30 tv size map and then add like one or two mods on like a hard or insane diff. to get lots of pp.

DT earning you a lot more pp, but it goes really fast and HR also giving lots of pp if your acc. and AR reading is really good.

With HD basically being the free bonus pp mod, if you like playing with hidden...

I am also stuck into that awkward position of not improving much according to the pp plays, however my streaming skills of old maps has been improved from time to time.

If you really want to get into this, maybe you could try some super long marathon maps, if you really have played any long maps.

Though I think most of the easier ones are really old maps, which are mostly infamous for their rather questionable and interesting mapping quality.

None of these are actually conducive to improvement, it's just advice given to 6 digits who only retry spam jump farm maps and nothing else, so they can get a more balanced diet of maps and not fall into bad habits. It'll be incredibly hard trying to rank up without retrying farm maps.

retrying is actually a good thing, retry spamming is bad.

farm maps are really good to improve on if you wanna rank faster

lol and yeah if you dont wanna focus on farming just play really hard maps

I think it would be valuable to state what skill is holding you back so that people who have overcome similar walls may be able to chime in.

You could try completely changing your playstyle to compensate for what you lack. For instance, if your aim is bad, try changing your area settings and/or pen grip (or switch to mouse). If your tapping sucks, try finding a new method of tapping. You could also try fiddling around in McOsu to tailor an Osu experience that will foster growth in your weakest skillsets. Bad aim? Maybe try low AR/BPM and high CS in McOsu. Nonetheless, as aforementioned, stating what is holding you back will help people give you advice.

Also, learning what people do differently from you won't necessarily translate into you improving. Everyone learns differently, and some faster/easier than others - as is indicated by the existence of the term "talent". You have to figure out what works for YOU which can be accomplished by testing various methods of improvement.

Lastly, just as in most professional facets of life, we all have our own plateaus (or skill ceilings). I have seen some claim to know that "anyone can hit X rank because the skill ceiling only comes into effect at x rank", but anyone who says this has ZERO evidence to support their claims. Thus, I believe only the individual can know when they have truly plateaued, which is when you have exhausted all feasible routes of improvement available to you to no avail.

Side note: I used the term "professional" to indicate any facet of life that one wishes to pursue to mastery.

If your main goal is to get higher rank then It would be best to follow yoony1's advice:

If you are playing a variety of maps you will be learning skills that don't reward pp and this will slow down how fast you learn the most important skills to get high pp scores. The best way to learn the skills you need to farm more is to play more farm maps. Farm maps will have the easiest to learn and most overweighed patterns and the more you play them, the better you will get at those specific patterns.

However farming wont make you improve your skill faster. It will just teach you different things.

Even without farming your rank should be higher. You can probably learn faster by doing what aveil said:

To add to this, you should be conscious of the learning process and how to build permanent skill.

The four stages of skill are as follows:

  1. Unconscious incompetence
The individual does not understand or know how to do something and does not necessarily recognize the deficit. They may deny the usefulness of the skill. The individual must recognize their own incompetence, and the value of the new skill, before moving on to the next stage. The length of time an individual spends in this stage depends on the strength of the stimulus to learn.
  2. Conscious incompetence
Though the individual does not understand or know how to do something, they recognize the deficit, as well as the value of a new skill in addressing the deficit. The making of mistakes can be integral to the learning process at this stage.
  3. Conscious competence
The individual understands or knows how to do something. It may be broken down into steps, and there is heavy conscious involvement in executing the new skill. However, demonstrating the skill or knowledge requires concentration, and if it is broken, they lapse into incompetence.
  4. Unconscious competence
The individual has had so much practice with a skill that it has become "second nature" and can be performed easily. As a result, the skill can be performed while executing another task. The individual may be able to teach it to others, depending upon how and when it was learned.
In short, you make conscious effort to improve the skill you lack by performing it correctly until it is unconscious. You have to see what you are doing wrong unconsciously and consciously make the effort to do the right thing until it is automatic.

The faster you do this process the faster you learn.

Playtime means nothing unless you are effectively using that time to be conscious of what to do different. You should be completely aware of how your tapping feels, how your aim feels, how you are reading each note, how you are interpreting the music. If anything feels off you need to see it and correct it. Every miss, every 100 and every misread has a cause. You need to find that unconscious habit and fix it.

Good luck!

Ah yes, this was me just last year - 1000 hours+ at 6 digit and hard stuck. Just enjoy the game man, ranking up don't matter that much if your still enjoying game. At six digit I just played around with different playstyles and it's pretty nice at the time because people have lower expectations of you in multis to fc maps. You might even be better than some 5 digit players and can be considered underranked

Honestly, I think you are doing fine. As someone with over 1k hours myself, don't even worry about the hours, there are way too many factors involved to be using it to compare yourself to others. One notable thing in your top plays is that the gap between your top play and 100th play is relatively large for your rank, so I assume you've been primarily focusing on increasing your skillcap and getting top plays?

What haven't you tried? In my experience at least, when I've gotten stuck, I was doing the same thing for too long. Playing maps that are too easy, too hard, only one type of map, etc. Have you been going for top plays through most of your playtime? Have you tried playing casual, easy maps? Playing maps you need NF on? Exploring mods? Working on speed? Improving old scores, or playing for clears only, etc? Switch it up until something seems to be working, and when that stops working, switch it up again. You said you haven't played farm maps much, so that's a start. Play more of them, you need the raw aim for 5* maps.

Thank you all for the surprising amount of advice, i really appreciate it.
After a session that was cut short due to Chaos in vc group (was so bad i had to meditate for half an hour after) i decided to take a step back.

since ive been playing nonstop the past year, as well as literally played every kind of map i can think of (even spamming marathon maps) i came to the conclusion it could be burnout (at least i hope it is) therefor playing less/breaks can work well. the problem is i fear of losing all my skill if lets say i play half as much per week.

also, i find it surprising how IRL stress factors (uprising hostile situation in my country) can have an impact gameplay wise.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ (with the one exception being that I do think retrying does hold you back a bit, I do it, everyone does it to some extent with few exceptions because they want to get that score, but I do believe that if all you cared about was maximizing improvement you shouldnt retry)

The community looks down on farm and short maps for no good reason, improving snap aim (which people associate with farm maps when really love bomb and trio cup are more disgusting than any jump map could hope to be) and your skill ceiling (as which is tested by short, diff spike-y maps) are both very important.
