for me i wouldn't download the actual game off of torrent websites because i think it's freaking piracy and freaking illegal even if it's morally freaking correct freaking freak

i would honestly just rip it myself if i had an actual copy of the game im trying to emulate

why are there two of these threads

what i was gonna say: ive played pokemon emerald on an emulator, it was fun, but not what i would do all the time

honestly emulation's fun but it can get you into trouble if you dont do it correctly

Emulation is useful! It's because of this that I was able to play my childhood games

Emulation is actually interesting cuz it is like the virtual box of consoles. Sometimes they’ll get illegal. But if you want to play smb, go for it.

i feel like my main problem with emulation is how much of it is legal

like it might be legal with old games, but you’re never told when the “old” is

and then again it’s probably not legal to do with any game in the first place

yeah exactly, i played pokemon emerald on an emulator when i was younger, and i felt like i was doing something wrong

so i stopped midway through the game

Emulation is essential in preserving video games when their creators wouldn't. Honestly govs wouldn't give a fuck if you're emulating. They barely give any fucks when someone pirates content (depends on the country).

If you're worried about the legality of emulating old video games, it's entirely fine if you emulate games that are no longer being sold/supported their publishers. (i.e. Nintendo no longer publishing the original super mario bros from 1985)

This, emulators themselves are legal, getting games that are no longer available for purchase is legal
As for the game that you can still purchase it's technically illegal but it won't get you into any trouble, and they're pretty rare since the only reliable emulators are for old consoles (we still can't properly emulate 7th gen consoles)
The only recent consoles/games we can emulate are the nintendo ones because nintendo is lazy (same system for gamecube/wii and wii u/switch, that's why emulators do both) and a few generations late in terms of performance
Duck o-o
emulation = good, the only way to preserve the experiences of most games without going out of your way to buy an old console for just one game, especially when the console is technically 'vintage' and so costs more than og retail

with the morality thing i just do it based on how much money i spent on the game physically, i have multiple copies of some games on psp and gameboy for example so i would have no moral quandaries about... obtaining those games to emulate if i cant rip them myself

Besides if you bought the game second hand the money wouldn't go to the people who made it anyway so it wouldn't change a thing
And yeah some old games/consoles are worth more than current gen consoles, I've seen games go for hundreds of €

Old games cant be played on their original hardware sometimes

I've seen some places that sell old games and consoles for a farily normal price, like some retro games stores from Akihabara. Maybe a trip to japan would be cheaper than getting an expensive cartridge on amazon that's already been used lmao.

Yeah it depends on the games and consoles you're trying to get
The most common are cheap but when you get into games that are not well known prices are extremely inflated
