Thoughts about region-locked news?

For some reason, my news feed aggregator often recommended me some news in which I can't access them at all due to being "region locked". This frustrates me, as I felt I was given hope then disappointed as I look at my phone saying "this content is not available for your region".

Do you think it's necessary to restrict some regions? What is the purpose of articles if they're restricted to select regions? Let me know what do you think.

Sounds horrible. I might sound crazy or didn't express my views properly, but restricing news to a specific region sounds like the government/other parties are controlling the people's thinking when it comes to real world events. It's like russia not hearing about the war in ukraine because their government restricted it. It's taking away your freedom to think rationally at least.

I......... think you took this so far. Let's start with an easier example: tech news. For some reason some companies restricts the news to specific region only. The restriction seems to come from the company rather than from government.

Ah sorry not those type of thoughts huh? Well I can see how it can get pretty annoying. Maybe they're trying to target a specific audience for their tech?

Well from what I've seen with region restriction, sometimes publishers want to save time and/or money by not translating it to the unpopular regions or countries that gain them a small amount of site traffic.

Also it may be a problem with specific laws in country, because, who knows, maybe they blocked that-specific-site .org and it appears region locked.

So yeah, there are quite a few possibilities

I don't have this issue since my language is basically spoken on a single country but i agree that it doesn't make sense to region lock the news

I wish my folks here would riot if that happens. Most of the people here would literally take beatings from the government and they would still support them.

Does blocking certain regions really save you some bandwidth, anyway? Is it significant enough?

If you add up all the locked regions, if publisher blocked a lot, you can see as they spend less or no resources for distribution and promotion of content to the regions

But of course, there is vpn

Censoring news from abroad isn't that uncommon for country outside of "the west" (+japan +s.korea). But locking content from different region FROM YOUR OWN COUNTRY just because they're from different region is very strange to say the least.

that also happens to me though but very rarely it do aint making sense while were living in the same country anyways
