It's pretty unusual since typically the japanese always have a huge grip on rhythm games. It's possible that the competition got intense ever since rhythm games got more mainstream in the west.

Or maybe because they are too busy playing osu!taiko? I mean the japanese have always been strong in rhythm games, just that there are much less of them in osu!standard
