You probably have come across this oldschool yet fresh genre of music as it quickly gained popularity in the recent years. however if you aren't entirely familiar with Phonk, let me introduce you to it!
What is Phonk?
Phonk is an underground style of hip-hop/trap music directly inspired by 90s Memphis rap, which calls SoundCloud it's home.
The DJ-s of the platform used classic 90s rap samples and hard hitting drums to create these jazzy and funky songs.
Much like every genre, Phonk also grew to house multiple sub-genres, such as:
Drift Phonk - high energy 808 cowbell music over some heavy bass and Memphis rap samples.
House Phonk - low-tempo drift phonk with house drums.
Wave Phonk - synthwave with cowbells and memphis rap samples.
Jungle Phonk - drum and bass with memphis samples and sometimes cowbells.
Aggressive Phonk - as the name suggests fast paced aggressive music which get you fired up before battle
Plug Phonk, Bubble Phonk, Hyper Phonk and many more!
Phonk gained it's popularity thanks to the Drift and Workout communities as well as various viral short form video edits but most importantly thanks to all the wonderful artists that produce new scores day by day!
The genre got it's first Ranked map in osu! in taiko mode in April of 2022 with
paz08's map of HPSHAWTY's BODY NUMB
osu! standard got it's first ranked Phonk map in September of 2022
in the form of PRXSXNT FXTURE's SMOKED OUT by SMOKELIND
Since then a few other songs have also popped up in the ranked section for standard with the most popular artist being DVRST with a map of "Komarovo" by SMOKELIND as well as 2 maps of "SHE IS HYPERACTIVE" by Peter and hehe

Tachibana_'s Rays of Serenity,
SWAKE's I Hate You I Love You and Close Eyes a song which also has a mania map by Plutes
surprisingly one of the most popular artists KORDHELL only has 2 maps in osu! both of which in the taiko mode
with Invisible O's Murder In My Mind (Sped Up Ver.)
and SWAKE's Nikita - TIMEOUT(KORDHELL REMIX)
Only a handful of songs yet alone producers of the genre are represented in osu! the goal of this forum post is to create a movement to popularize PHONK music in our ever growing rhythm game.
