it's a pointless and stupid mechanic which serves absolutely no purpose in a rhythm game.

i have two ideas of how to remove it (for all gamemodes except for taiko):

1. Just remove health.

also remove nofail mod because it no longer serves any purpose.

medals which require you to pass a map can be replaced with "get 85% acc or higher" or something like that.
that would also make it harder to cheese certain medals, i got a pass on 8* oshama scramble with 80% acc which absolutely should not give me the 8* pass medal.

also it would make leaderboards way better.
for an example, look at the leader board on 12* xeroa, mrekk should clearly be no 1 on the leader board, getting 69.56% acc with NF,HD is clearly way more impressive than the six people who have HT passes.
but this is more of a problem with score than nofail mod.

(i think hp is unlikely to be removed entirely so i have another proposal)

2. Make nofail mod be like it is in beatsabre.

probably requires less changes to be made, so i think this would be more likely to actually happen.

only apply the 0.50x score multiplier if you fail (like in beatsabre), otherwise it will just be as if you didn't use nofail, which means it doesn't show that you used it on your profile or when you look at the score.
so for example if you have hidden and nofail and you pass a map, it shows that you only used hidden.

also when you fail, instead of showing the pop up saying "you have failed but you can continue playing" which i find kind of distracting, do what it does in beatsabre and just replace the scorebar with a cross.

Why to remove hp:

it's not a massive deal, it's just annoying.
but why can't i just play beatmaps all the way through without having to be at an arbitrary skill level, or without using nofail which at the moment gives you 0.5x score no matter if you fail or not, which makes me want to not use it, because i worry that "what if i do pass, then i'll have 0.5x score for no reason", and also i think it just looks ugly to show you used nofail.
like if i fc a map but i use nofail it just looks bad on my profile that i used nofail.

some of the problems with current nofail mod i mentiond could be solved by actually ranking scores by how impressve they are, instead of how high your combo is, but even if osu one day gets an ok scoring/ranking system, removing hp/changing nofail would still just be a massive quality of life improvement, being allowed to play all the way through beatmaps and not having nofail show up if you pass.

there's no reason not to at least use my second idea. (not that i know of)
it also doesn't seem to me like it would be very difficult to implement the second idea.

2nd thing is actually a good idea
1st one can be solved by just taking the ego hit and using nf as it is, no point getting a good play u cant replicate lol

i don't see how you can say the 2nd idea is good, but the 1st idea is bad, because in practice they are both effectively the same thing, with the only real difference being that the 2nd idea keeps the 0.50x score penalty if you fail, which in my opinion serves no purpose because failing doesn't necessarily mean you overall played worse.

also, i don't agree with "no point getting a good play u cant replicate", because wether or not you can replicate a play doesn't make the play itself more or less impressive.
Duck o-o
how are they 'effectively the same'
2nd makes it so that you are punished for failing the map with nf while not being punished for passing with nf
1st just removes the punishment altogether

also i never said 1st is bad, just that it can be solved ;-; trust me, ive lost enough top plays from not being able to spin fast enough on hr to want hp gone lol
however theres little to no chance that hp gets removed so what i said is the only real solution
tldr: 2nd thing is just a more plausible suggestion 👍

sorry i don't know why i said they are the same thing, that was stupid.

also i know that hp will most likely never be removed, i just wanted to say what i really want (no punishment at all for failing, which makes hp pointless) and then to give a more realistic suggestion.

The punishment for failing is to retry the map. NF exists and has a counterbalance to where if you dont miss you dont receive a penalty on pp. i can see that that the issue of not missing and potentially getting a 100% on NF can mean that your score is reduced even though you didn't exactly need NF, but if you are 100% something then you dont need NF for it anyways, just play without it. On the same note, if you can't get past a diff spike in the map and keep failing at that point then NF is completely required if you want to pass the map. Diff spikes happen for a reason and it is essential to keep them in the core game mechanics.

If you arent able to pass the map you are more than likely never to get near 85% accuracy.

Not removing HP ensures that not everyone can just get pass medals and the medals mean something. 85% acc is extremely easy to get if you can actively do the difficulty/star rating.

I see no point in removing HP nor removing NF because they are intertwined.

This post to me just seems like a "skill issue" and wanting to be able to get full score for a play you cannot do. (I dont mean that aggressively or to target you, just thats how it seems).

A more realistic suggestion is to have the case where if you fall within a certain accuracy you dont receive a score penalty from NF, but again, that can be remedied by not using NF in the first place, especially if you are able to get a good enough accuracy. Good enough accuracy and combo will give you a good enough score.

My suggestion: Dont use NF if you know you wont fail, and for those spinners... use spun out.

sorry, i didn't know that's where i was meant to post it. but it turns out my second suggestion has already been denied multiple times, and it's unlikely hp will be removed so there's no point in posting it there
