I think we need a way that a beatmap creator can censor explicit lyrics for a song, maybe by just a simple static or a bleep like on TV show censorship. It can be turned on or off, depending on whether you want it or not. The reason for this is usually I'll bring the game to my high school and we'll all take turns playing songs, but since it's over a speaker, we can't play any explicit songs because it can get us suspended. I also will play without speakers at home, and my younger siblings can hear everything. It could make it possible for others to hold tournaments in public on speakers for everyone to listen and it could get a younger audience to play (not saying we need more young people though :P) How it can be added is the beatmap creator chooses where the vulgarity is, add a segment of how long the word is, label the song as 18+ or 15+ etc., then it's done! The user then just chooses it when he/she wants it censored or not. This was just something in my mind for awhile, and if we can get this, me and everyone else could be playing more complex songs with explicit lyrics, without the worry of any 'f bombs' in public. If we choose to censor the chat lobbies, why not the lyrics?

Some notes rely on vocals so it might not be a good idea.
I think you can just hide those songs (that has explicit lyrics) by moving these beatmaps (inside osu!/Songs) from another folder where it won't be publicly viewed and used by osu!.

I think about requesting a feature for hiding beatmaps on the song selection (including 'Show All' filter).

Maps that have explicit language have to be marked with in the title that they contain mature content

@Lust, I'm aware they need to be marked, but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that there could be censoring in those marked songs, say if you were to hold a church event (bad example, but just bear with it) and you wanted to play a song everyone knows, but it's explicit.

@Nathanael, I'm not wanting the song hidden from the community, I just want it so you can play anywhere without worry of offending others.

That's up to the artist who made the song in the first place to take care of.

Alternatively you're free to do whatever you like, censor it yourself if you mind the explicit lyrics.

and they generally are.

And also, stop playing videogames at school.

This actually is kind of.a decent idea (Alternatively, mappers would have to map clean versions if possible unless the clean version makes the map unplayable (Whoch ive seen happen)

A bleep wouldnt necxesarily be the best idea though, since it can screw with hitsounds and actually make maps harder (especially if sai censored word is on a non-dominant note in the beat). Silencing would just screw with rhythms and stuff (especially if people havent heard the song before and dont know that aaid word would be missing)

I also dont see this being like a feature in the editor. If there were censoring, itd probably have to be storyboarded in or something

The process to do this is complicated. It would be much easier to just warn of explicit content like epilepsy warns the player. You can then play songs that don't have expletives in them.

@CDFA, I know what you mean. If you were to map a clean version of Look at Me Now, it would be difficult since 3/4ths of the words would be gone. But I'm also not saying it should be silenced, because that would make the game no fun. There could also just be bleeps in the most noticeable places only, like breaks, note pauses, spinners, etc.

Making it so only main curse words are censored would be pointless. It kind of ruins the entire point of censorship, since youd be letting stuff pass by, still not making it suitable for younger audiences.

Im more into TVO's idea, to be honest. Im not sure why explicit markings are only shown on the beatmap thread. Especially for people who downloa via beatmap packs or osu!direct, not everyone is gonna look at the beatmap thread. Ive looked at maybe a little less than a quarter of the threads of maps i have downloaded (and most are because i was modding them)

It wont forcibly stop people, but theres no way to forcibly stop someone from accessing uncensored content anyway unless someone sits with the kid 24/7 or something (and if that happens then im sorry to th parent that has had to see everything ive said in #osu :P)

Idk but there's not really that many songs that need to be censored, and if the songs are in other languages, then it's not gonna matter so much afaik. So if you're broadcasting the songs, avoiding some mature English songs would work, I guess.

Actually there were some nsfw songs selected into the mappools of OWC 2013, like this, it doesn't matter that much though, for the song is in Japanese, but if you check the lyrics, you'll find that it really is nsfw. Sometimes language barrier would work pretty well.

So what I'm suggesting is to try some clean songs when playing in public or with kids around, or at least make sure it's not in a language that 95% of the audience can understand really well.

I'm gonna say "ew", here. A filter for songs based on 18+ status (a status which is already marked on beatmaps) would be far more effective and wouldn't make me want to slap people for having a 2000Hz sine wave every other second on certain songs.

Solution: Stop playing those songs in public

and yes, the 18+ filter would be good. It could also mean that things could be a little less strict when it comes to maps (e.g. the background being some anime boob girl from gelbooru would be OK if it was tagged as 18+)
