Currently with the current guideline, kiai's are technically allowed to end whenever they like, however most don't due to common sense. I believe the current guideline should be reworded to include the ending of kiai's as the sudden stop in the flash can feel out of place OR the kiai may feel like it extends too long. Having it been in the RC would help as a reference point in modding.

Kiai should start on a sound in the music. Doing so otherwise causes the kiai flash to feel unrelated to the song.

Kiai should start and end on a sound in the music. Doing so otherwise causes the kiai flashes or endings to feel unrelated to the song.

kiai ends are more nuanced than kiai starts, for example it would be perfectly sensible to end a kiai when a sound ends even if there's no distinct sound there. I could also see it working out fine if you ended a kiai on a big white tick that doesn't have a distinct sound or even a distinct end of a sound if the measure leading up to it makes it feel like there could be something there but the song subverts that expectation.

not sure how to say all that in a concise but non-cryptic way but these kinds of ways of ending kiais are reasonable enough that they shouldn't be discouraged by the guideline

agree with lewski

also, sometimes kiais don't end on anything because they're part of kiai flashes, ending right after the note they start on

maybe it could be reworded or something it's just that i've seen people extend kiais past when you would expect them to end and the song doesn't support it?
quila
can you give some examples?
i am very gay
i dont really see the reason why this should be in the rc. if a kiai makes sense then it should be in the map and if it doesnt then it will get modded out regardless of if there are any rules or guidelines, the same way that concepts such as spacing dont have rules/guidelines
h3oCharles
what if the kiai end is placed on a passive note or is in a middle of a fade out of a held note/instrument?
Ryu Sei
osu!mania should be exempt from this, since based on current version, a kiai doesn't do anything other than just giving some star bursts. Unless this will change in future, I support this proposal. The kiais should end in a sensible manner.
h3oCharles
this may just be for osu!taiko, cuz its the only mode where kiai actually matters
Ryu Sei
Not really. osu! and osu!catch also benefitted from this, since kiais also causes the playfield to render glows. This can be obviously seen on HD mod.
Hivie
archiving because as pointed out in the thread, kiai flashes are common in non-osu!taiko modes and this would limit said flashes
