Ok, this may sound like a rant, but bear with me I think it's constructive.

Can we all PLEASE pick colors that don't blend in with the background image's color and become difficult to read? For example, if you have a dark background, try to use lighter colors instead of stuff like dark blue. Call me miserably blind but I have trouble reading stuff when you pick 5 dark colors with a dark background image.

Why can't we just use a lighter shade on dark? It'll make a lot of peoples' lives easier I imagine. Vice-versa you can use a darker shade on lighter images.

Oh and also this becomes even worse with kiai x_x

Please stop doing this, I beg all of those who are currently doing this. I can't read with your image, and if I delete your image it's even worse because it's pure black. Yes I'm a terrible osu! player but you don't have to add artificial difficulty >_>

</rant or whatever you call it>

Protip: Make better backgrounds too.

i would've thought this would be a given. its surprising to see how much it happens though

Sadly a lot of people have horribly calibrated monitors (or monitors which are impossible to calibrate, like the one I'm using now which is so horribly broken it takes about an hour to get working right and it's flickering which is annoying the hell out of me...) which makes the map look fine to them.

Oh we, this is what mods are for.

Maybe this can be added as a requirement for beatmap approval?

While I don't think there's a general need for a "use light colors on dark backgrounds" rule, I (and hopefully most mods) try to point out when a particular color or set of colors is a poor choice.

I also hate black hitcircles in general

I also hate gray hitcircles in general, screws up tag play so much

It's silly to think that a dark hit circle would work on a dark background, but people do it.
The beatmaps I've tried to make (which one I've given up on at the moment) have got the contrast that makes it easier to read for anyone ranging from newbie to godly. Hopefully, as Strager says, my monitor isn't shitty =)

I'm not sure how people would perceive this notion if it was made into a beatmap approval requirement, but adding this to the list of things modders should look for would be good. Maybe good enough, who knows.

It kind of is, falling under aesthetics/general playability
Wojjan
In this situation, I replace my background with a white screen.

*strager. =|

Also, it's not just the monitor, but the configuration. Some people set their monitors to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaay tooooooooooooo briiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight, and sadly that's the default most of the time!

Anyway, I have on a few occasions used a solid-coloured background like Wojjan does. It's more annoying with a storyboard to play with, though.

you guys will complain about anything won't you

Black hitcircles on a black background are BAD.
I'm looking at you, Chocobo...

This map has been deleted on the request of its creator. It is no longer available.

I can't stand white hitcircles against white/light backgrounds, it's impossible to see the default cursor...
