trial and error. At the beginning it's mostly error but good feedback will point out better alternatives.

You should learn how to time first. You could try mapping already ranked songs (just create a new difficulty) and start from there. Place objects in the order your prioritize sounds (vocals>instrumental>percussion) and compare with the ranked map.
