the way i started learning to do somewhat longer patterns was to group them in threes when reading, especially if they're a mix of don and katsu. and i guess just trying to play more to get more used to alternating between hands

play more
but why?
because in taiko patterns are everything (for example, kkk, ddd, ddk, kdd...) and in long streams, even the most hard and random one has patterns in it. so, what you do automatically when playing these streams its to divide them in short patterns.
ex: kddkdkdkkdkdkdkddkdkdkdkkd

when you play these, your brain can divide the notes of different ways, like:
(kddk)(kdk)(dkkd)(kdkdk) and like that.
but, as said before, your brain does this automatically, you don't think about it. the only way of learning patterns it's playing more.
