I will be referring to the following phrase in the ranking criteria:

You must use the Source field if the song comes from or is directly tied to another media such as a video game, movie, series, event, etc. This also applies if the song was featured or tied to a media after it was released, but is primarily known due to that source. If a song has multiple potential sources, any option is valid.

Right now it is unclear what is considered "primarily known", and also which sources are not allowed for the Source field.

I will be referring to this map which has recently been ranked: beatmapsets/1702760#taiko/3479183

Initially when it was uploaded it had "Indihome" as the source as the song came from a commerical from this company. However, Faputa marked a Problem with it and it got removed, stating that "Use source when its directly tied to video game, movie, series, event, etc., Indihome is a company and their advertisement campaign isn't "Indihome" either"

However, I feel that the Source field should be used here, the song clearly would be "primarily known" to anyone who knows of it, specifically Indonesians I'm assuming. Faputa mentioned that it's a similar case for FA songs using the osu! source. In this case, in which osu! is one of or the only media the song is featured in, I feel it should not apply, unless it is widely known as an "osu! song".

As a song being directly tied to a brand, I think the Source field should apply here, it did for another recently ranked song: beatmapsets/1777816#osu/3640854 in which the Source was "Student Finance England" which similarly does not fall under Faputa's proposal of Source only applying for "video game, movie, series, event, etc.".

Would like some clarification on this in the RC if possible, here are my proposed changes:

You must use the Source field if the song comes from or is directly tied to another media such as a video game, movie, series, event, brand, etc. This also applies if the song was featured or tied to a media when or after it was released, but is primarily known or associated due to that source. If a song has multiple potential sources, any option is valid.

Sorry for short reply, since I am not too available at the moment.

You must use the Source field if the song comes from or is directly tied to another media such as a video game, movie, series, event, brand, etc.
Agree with that direction forward. The current "etc." phrase does not really hint "brand" from the list "video game, movie, series and event"

Apart from that, regarding osu! as the source, I believe we currently cannot use it as the source unless it is directly tied to series and event from osu! actually, say TWC2022, a labour of love, etc.. There are some songs fitting the category of "being primarily known" due to osu!, with the song receiving much popularity in osu! before any other sources (except YouTube). For example, VINXIS' Sidetracked Day. I look forward to more opinions for this matter as well.

However, it is true that we now have a walkaround for labelling featured artists so we don't deal with it on the source field, and still complies with the current source field rules.

I want to add about using osu! as a source, I 100% agree with the current usage being tied to series or event, this usage is very similar to using BMS as a source. I feel like songs like Sidetracked Day, or Speed of Link, which is a very similar case, could use the osu! source, but in this scenario, it could be up to discretion of the BNs, rather than a strict rule or guideline? I understand that the current rule is you must use the Source field if applicable, however in ambiguous scenarios such as this, where it is unclear, it would be okay to not use it. Would like some more opinions on this.

I think Faputa's change was unnecessary, the source for a remix of a commercial made by a company should not be different from the source of the original song; they both created the original music and should be credited the same as any game, event, community, or whatever. Following a different, unspoken rule regarding companies violates the BN rules to only follow finalized rules and amendments and creates confusion about how the RC is supposed to be applied when ranking maps.

If they have a problem, then it should be dealt with when they contact osu! and not presumed that problems will arise, else anybody can make this point against any remix of any kind. If someone was to map the original song, Indihome would be the source used for it because they made the song (the code name of the advert campaign and/or the actual names of the composers are rarely known or referred to, so I found this point really weird in the context of the post).

But I don't think the RC needs to be changed at all, we can go in circles for all eternity changing to one interpretation and another while new people enter the game and old ones leave. There's no point in listing different specifics when "etc." literally covers everything and the only error is in someone's interpretation of the phrase.

Agreed with Nifty, there is no change needed to be made here - the problem stamp on Tari Ubur Ubur seems incredibly incorrect to me.

talked with aceticke, archiving as the general consensus seems to be that this is unnecessary
