Consistency vs. It Just Works Better

What are your thoughts on mapping more consistently (following the same rhythm, same sounds) or scrapping that and just going for whatever works better?
Is too consistent too boring and repetitive, or is going for whatever too inconsistent?
Does this affect the quality of the map, flow from changing rhythm patterns, or just mainly how the map is built?
IS IT SUBJECTIVE?

First, read Mentorship - Cycle 2, Discussion 3: Consistency & Variation if you haven't already.

As a mapper, it is up to you how much consistency or variation you want to include in your map. Maps that are typically regarded as "good" usually introduce variation when it is musically expected, versus other maps that show a lack of understanding when music is expected to change (such as ignoring weak transitions imposed by the composer).

On the other hand, you can intentionally make your map more consistent so it works better in a tournament setting. As a mapper, you can choose to ignore subtle variations in the song to make it easier for players to get e.g. 1100pp on your map. Some mappers refer to these maps as "consistency maps".
