Is mahjong really as hard to learn as it looks? The ammount of combinations and pieces seem pretty high.

It always looked like an interesting game to me but I don't know where to actually start learning. Oh and even watching (and enjoying) the whole Akagi anime didn't help much.

Does anybody know of any websites or tutorials or guides that teach how to play Mahjong? I want to learn but don't know where to start :/

You should start by trying to memorize some rules of the game, the rule can be found all over the Internet. You have to memorize all the "yaku" (Winning condition to know the value of the "hand) first of course, no shortcuts~ Yaku is also kind of similar to normal poker cards game in a way, where you have to memorize the value of the hand (Example: Straight, Flush, Full-House,Royal Flush etc). Just that Japanese has more things to memorize and also quite complicated. Let's say you normal poker cards game, you have and 3 of diamonds, hearts, spades and 5 of clubs, spades. You'll get a Full-house, but in Japanese mahjong term is a little different. Normal value of a full-house is 35 (<Saw this somewhere before), that in poker you'll stick with your hand value which is 35. In mahjong, if you notice in you hand, there is actually a triple 3s and double 5s. Value for triple if not mistaken the value is 24? and the pairs of 5s is worth maybe around 8? Also don't forget there's a value for two pairs too! Pair 3s and 5s, maybe around 16 points. So total them up (35+24+8+16) which is 83 points. Something like that (sorry for the bad example ._.). And also try to play a bit online? Or download some application or game that is related to Japanese mahjong. If you have iOS devices, I recommend you to download this application called "JanRyuMon". Is an English translated Japanese mahjong game, and they also have some tutorial on how to play and how scoring system works. Is directly translated version so you'll be expecting quite a lot of bad English there ._. Anyway, read up the rules on Japanese mahjong~ After you understand the concepts of mahjong, you have to create your own strategy on playing mahjong, usually to try making the hand value as big as possible. At a certain stage, you'll know how to "read" your opponent's hand but looking at their discarded tiles and counting probability and stuff. I'll stop here for now, I'll explain a bit more if you still don't understand~ I started mahjong after watching "Saki", great mahjong anime showing how significant special "yaku" is and how different people with different style of playing faces each other. Anyway, good luck! :D

I learned this before watching Saki lol.
I play on Tenhou and we play IRL once a week over here. Though we still need a scoring calculator. (Scoring fu so hard ;_;)

Haha, calculating fu value is the hardest part in Japanese mahjong~ You'll eventually get used to it by playing a lot more~ ;) If you want, you can just memorize off from the fu scoring table LOL. That's why most of my game, I always try to make a hand value at least 4 hans because too lazy calculate and stuff xD

I can only count points for hands that have 5 han and above

Mangan [ 5 han only ] 8,000/12,000 nondealer/dealer
Haneman [ 6 ~ 7 han ] 12,000/18,000
Baiman [ 8 ~ 9 han ] 16,000/24,000
Sanbaiman [ 10 han ~ 12 han ] 24,000/36,000
Yakuman [ 13 han limit ] 32,000/48,000

plz teach me how to count fu plz

Dont take it too much at one time...
Just know that the basic of mahjong.... make 4 sets of triples ( which can be in sequence like 4-5-6/ 5-6-7 etc or 3 of a kind like 5-5-5 ) and 1 double out of the 13 tiles you have in order to win...( There are a few exceptions like the 7 pairs and the kokushi musou but dont worry about those for now)
You pick a tile and discard a tile every turn..
Note that 3x4 + 2 = 14....
So your last tile has to complete your hand in order to win
You can either win off someone's discard... which is called a ron ... or win by drawing your own winning tile which is called tsumo
Having 4 sets and a double doesnt automatically gives you a win..
You need at least 1 yaku....
A yaku is a requirement in the arrangement in your tiles...
Google search "List of yaku" for the list of yaku.

Its also very easy to remember all the tiles in riichii mahjong
In riichi mahjong.. There are 3 suits.... Man, Sou and Pin
Man = (Tiles with chinese numbers on it)
Sou = Bamboo
Pin = Circles
These suits have numbering from 1~9 ..... and you have 4 of each tile

Then you have the honour tiles...
Which are the wind tiles
east 东(ton) , south 南 (nan) , west 西 (xia) , south 北 (pei)
Dont ask me why the order is so awkward...
Im more familiar with this order lel.... i had to google to see which is south or west or whatever ><

Then there are the Haku tiles or dragon tiles
They are White, green and Red
You will be able to tell between them unless u are colour blind lel

So I found this site, and after a while when I got the message "ron" I got this: .
Can someone tell me what I did wrong?

You cant ron off a tile that you discarded before

You are in tenpai
Waiting on a 5pin and 8pin....
But theres a 5pin and 8pin on your discard area
A rule in riichi mahjong that states that you cant win off someone else's discard if that same tile is in your discard pile
This is called "furiten" ...

You can only win on a tsumo in that case because your wait was furiten

Keep that in mind and prevent waits like this ..
The only way you can win in this case is from a tsumo

It will be fine if you are on a 7-8 wait...
><

A word of advice..... Dont open your hand unless its absolutely necessary
Opening your hand means that u have less tiles to defend with, people have more safe tiles against you.....
Your hand will also lose value since riichi and menzen tsumo are no longer possible....
Try to keep it hidden as much as you can....
Its a lot better

Example : Riichi itself gives you 1 han.... you can win off a hand with no yaku.... since riichi is a yaku itself already
If you tsumo with a closed hand... you get another extra han too
If you win on a riichi.... You get to flip the tile under the dora indicator which means ..... there might be even more dora... (this is called an ura dora)

Alot of yaku are worth more hidden than open....

In this case, you can't ron because of furiten (Like Yuu-Chii said) and your hand has no value (yaku). That's why they state "No multiplier", probably means no value  If you "chi" and "pon", and the tile number is in-between 2-8 (Means no terminal: 1 and 9), and no honor tiles, you'll get 1 han. One of the cheapest and fastest way to win the round. It is called 'tanyao". Usually if you play online and you win off with "tanyao" only, they're gonna scold you like hell LOL.

Doesn't matter, you still win :)

I prefer making cheap hands most of the time. (Tanyao/Yakuhai) They're more reliable and easy to do.
Especially when I'm dealer, IMO you should make use of the bonus rounds and win with cheap hands as much as you can.
I generally only aim for big hands if I'm down on points or if the hand I got dealt with is already close to being formed.

kthxbye

also I swear Tenhou is rigged. I got to 4dan and then I noticed my luck is suddenly and consistently a lot worse. it happened when I got to 1dan, 2dan, and 3dan, but after some time it returned to normal. none of this happens in private rooms and it doesn't happen if I quit for a month and then return. = =

NoHitter wrote:

I'm jealous ;w; no players in the US near where I live

also counting fu is easy. minkou = 2/4 fu (2-8/honors or terminals) ankou = 4/8 fu minkan = 8/16 fu ankan = 16/32 fu shuntsu = 0 fu pair = 2 fu for dragons and value winds/0 fu for trash winds +10 fu if you ron with a closed hand +2 fu if you tsumo unless pinfu \:D/

EDIT: here's the other one
1. suu ankou tanki 0.0 but everyone had all my 4m so I couldn't even get it. so close but so far = =
2. the other 3 people had all declared riichi
3. they were all waiting on 4m AT THE SAME TIME so I couldn't change my wait
4. two of them were also waiting on 7m, which I had an ankou of. the other one was waiting on 6s which someone had a pair of. so even though everyone else had declared riichi, all their waits ended up being dead o.o
5. my 4-sided wait was entirely dead besides the tile I finally won with
6. this marked the 3rd time out of like 6 where I failed to get suu ankou. either I didn't draw the tile, the hand was a draw, or I won with the wrong wait like what happened here. I still haven't got suu ankou even though I somehow got a chinrou rofl
7. I didn't even win after this cause I dealt into a double ron on the last hand both of which were suji. seriously.. = =

Ooh hello hello.

I usually play on tenhou from time to time and a few times a month with a few friends on the auto-table.

To be honest I have no idea what any of the lingo (except the hands, obviously) is and can only score at a basic level. But I do enjoy mahjong so much, so if anyone wants to play a random game for fun, I'd be interested~

That site is the one I recommend to all newbies who ask me where to learn the game, since it has the actual game, is simple and has all the different hands listed, all in English: http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html

I've been playing Riichi for quite some time, maybe 4 or 5 years (and participated in the European Championships in 2010), actively with a group of friends IRL and quite a lot in Tenhou, too.

i've been tenpai for suu ankou 6 times without making it
I've also been tenpai for kokushi once and chuuren once. the only yakuman I ever got was that chinroutou I posted =.= really not sure how the hell I was able to make a chinroutou without ever getting any other yakuman, not to mention at that point I hadn't ever made honroutou either @_@

in 3p I've made one kokushi and that was it. been tenpai for suu ankou like 5 more times, daisangen once, and like 1 or 2 kazoes

I have no idea what the hell is going on cause suu ankou is supposed to be the easiest yakuman to get. my life will be complete the day I finally make a goddamn suu ankou for once >_<
Pegram
Oh right, I've done some kokushi musous too. And one of them was haitei lul

I'd say dai-san-gen is the easiest one to get, but it's really heavily based on luck (gotta have a lot of dragons). At least I got a couple of them before I got my first suu-an-kou. Besides, if you're only aiming for 3 pons of dragons, you won't need to pay that much attention to the rest of your hand, although with suu-an-kou you do.

My brother has made a ren-hou in 3-player-mahjong and once made a ryuu-ii-sou by accident in Tenhou :----D

We got our first set from mahjongmart.com (which seems to be now known as reachmahjong.com), the rest were bought from China by our dad when we went there for a business trip. And the last set we got was bought from Japan when we visited there.

The set we bought from reachmahjong.com was probably this http://reachmahjong.com/en/products-pag ... set-white/ , it works fine even though it's slightly smaller than the normal sized set.
